Migrating to M1 Mac Mini, Questions

Having a New Mac Mini delivered tomorrow to use as a server, so a few questions if you be so kind to input.

At the moment my files are on an iMac and have been looking at the help pages for guidance. Firstly after I have backed up the database do I just transfere the updated backup to the internal hard drive in the Mini.

As I am using an External SSD 2Tb drive, do I just copy the file folders onto the drive and once I have downloaded the Roon software and installed, do I just connect the drive to the Mini then select " Restore a Backup " when in the login page, and then I assume I will need to direct Roon to the Data Backup file.

The Data file is called " Roon Backup iMac " can I then rename to " Roon Mac Mini ".

As I have under 12,000 tracks would it be better to start with a fresh install?. Also anyone using a Mini as a server what system settings do you use apart form the obvious " Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off "

I would appreciate your input, Thanks.

  1. Connect this drive to your current iMac and do a Roon Backup.
  2. Connect the drive to your Mini.
  3. At install time on your new Mini, do a Roon Restore from the connected drive.

Don’t rename anything (why?) and don’t copy/move any Backups.

You realize that this is not moving your music files?

A fresh install without a Backup will lose any curation (tags, playlists, etc.) that you may have done.

BTW - If your Mini is an M1, then you will have to use Rosetta to run Roon There is no M1 native Roon.

Automatically taken care of by the os, no user intervention required.

Hi Terry,

Take a moment to review this FAQ, it might be helpful.

Yes I do know thanks, and thank you for your input.

Hi everyone,

just to let you know the migration went well and now up and running :grinning:.

The only stumbling block was I could not seem to connect an apple fairly old bluetooth keyboard and trackpad ( Aluminium )!. In the end had to disconnect the keyboard and mouse from the iMac then pair to the M1 but that wasn’t seamless either?. Having to swap between the two machines a few times was a pain :rage:. Think I will invest in a cheap usb keyboard and mouse for the future just in case although I have managed to set up screen share :slightly_smiling_face:.

I’m also using my new M1 mini as my main computer so have installed App Tamer to throttle the CPU usage of a number of apps (e.g. Dropbox) and background tasks (e.g. Spotlight and Time Machine). This probably isn’t strictly necessary, but I wanted to ensure that Roon always has enough CPU cycles available. Other that that I haven’t made any other changes.
