Minimum CPU in NAS for shared storage

I’m wondering what the minimum CPU power for a NAS is to share files with Roon Core (running on WIndows 10 on a NUC)

I have a 9 year old Synology DS 411 - the specs are:

  • CPU: 1.6GHz.
  • Memory: 512MB DDR3.

Are there any speed considerations here for gapless play?
Do I need to update my NAS to something with more memory and a faster/more powerful CPU?
Thanks!

Given all it’s doing is file sharing I’d guess it’d be fine, particularly if the NAS and core NUC share a decent wired network connection. Why not try it and if it doesn’t work consider putting the library on the core? Then the NAS can provide backup duties. I’m not sure of library size so that might not be practical. Failing that, if it doesn’t work then upgrade the NAS.

I have an older Synology 214 with even lower specs than yours and it delivers Flac files to Roon core with no problem at all. At the end of the day it is an easy job for any NAS. Just make sure you don’t use WiFi.

If you wanted to feed multiple zones playing different tracks and do other NAS tasks at the same time then it might struggle. But if it’s just doing “normal” stuff it would be fine.
