It’s anyone’s guess at the moment. Last I heard they were going for an end-to-end only and not software (if this is the case, I see failure)… plus they must have a large amount of content to start for it to become successful… we will all see together.
Well at least to me MQA setting sounds better on the 2L albums. I double-check in Roon and it’s just feeding the HIFI version since it showed 44.1K vs 48K when playing the MQA version. So at the very least if Roon is able to pass the MQA file thru, we’ll get some sonic benefit without MQA DAC. Also nice to know that some MQA files are already in Tidal’s library.
Oh and for the other person that had Master setting. When I first open, I need to play file once as HIFI first and then switch to Master to get it to work.
If anyone know of any other MQA files out there, I’d like to try more. Too bad I don’t have MQA to really test these out.
So 24/44.1 and 24/48 are the highest format the MQA will decode without a special DAC but even those file should sound better. Doesn’t sound like there will be hi-res software decoding at this point. Just access to a better source file.
So as far as Roon is concerned, it just needs Tidal to pass the MQA stream through and that should as simple as a switch on Tidal’s end. Also, Roon would need to a MQA indicator in the Streaming info.
Now there’s some talk the this file won’t sound as good as the standard CD track without a special DAC but so far in my listening, all the 2L albums sound better in MQA. I’d say the improvement is similar to me using HQPlayer with Roon on Tidal tracks. I only have 24/96 DAC, so HQPlayer improvement is noticeable but not mind blowing. The real test would be with a MQA DAC.
I found this article that kind of some is up:
Just installed the latest version of the TIDAL app on mac, and I see this:
Does this mean TIDAL is streaming in MQA? If so how does this show up in Roon?
Streaming on the TIDAL app looks to be going as 24/44.1 to my DAC (EmmLabs, no MQA decoding), streaming on Roon looks to be 16/44.1.
Not so in my region (Belgium).
Hopefully soon…
I’ve been posting my finding about Tidal’s MQA support a little higher up in this topic.
If you want to test MQA tracks, search Tidal for any albums found here.
You’ll see the MQA text next to the speaker. You’ll only get hi-res with a MQA DAC but even without, you’ll notice the Master setting sounds better on these recordings. And some change output to 48K, so you can tell it’s a different stream.
Would like to know why MQA Master Option isn’t showing up on my Tidal app. Latest version, US Region, Mac,
What version / build number?
You should use the app instead of the web browser.
I hope it will work for you.
Please let me know if it does. I suspect this just depends on what region you are in
Thanks for following up.
I am using the Mac app and I’m in the US. Specifically, in Alabama which sometimes doesn’t want to be in the US but, for now, is in the US.
I’ve found information on another post from yesterday here in the forum (which I can’t find right now) about a US Tidal user who has this capability. ??
Thanks for letting me know. I got confused as the screenshot you provided states tidal for web…
I haven’t seen any official statement from tidal about this. I hope they roll out this update to everyone soon
I’m in the US, in NYC, which pays for the rest of the country including Alabama (you’re welcome to leave… ). Works.
Hey Mig,
Just read your posts on CA.
Seems like its working for some and not others. Mysterious. Some CA posts say it appears and disappears.
Thinking of deleting and reinstalling the Mac Tidal ap.
Thank you for replying.
Forgot to mention. I have two macs. This works on my music mini but not on my mac pro. Same configs. Same network.
^^ Same DAC, as well?
Same version of the Tidal app and same binary image for the executable/.dmg?
No. The mini has an EmmLabs XDS1v2 attached to it, the macpro only has the internal ones.
Same version, binary (as far as about tells me), same account, same network, same OSX, not same DAC, but I attached a DAC to my macpro and still no Master on it. Mini has Master no problem.
I’m in Belgium and don’t have the “Master” setting but I have an MQA capable DAC (explorer2) and the latest tidal version. Running El Capitan on retina macbook pro
I think it’s a regional thing at the moment…
