I have music in 3 different places right now and it drives me crazy. I have 4 TB Lacie External HD, I have a 1TB external SSD, an dI have a 1TB drive inside my Innuos ZEN. How do you all store your music? Is a NAS the way to go?
14TB USB drives. One for music, one for backup, plus backup with BackBlaze. No need to store music ssd.
How much storage are you using or plan to need? Are these drives all online all the time? If so, Roon can search should be able to access them for its library. If it’s ease-of-management, then as Andrew mentioned, a single larger drive to consolidate and then a similar for backup, or a NAS.
3 14TB Drives?
Well, my guess is the suggestion is to take one drive and consolidate all music on it, and going forward only use it for all music storage. You would then copy that drive to backup one. And, then you would have that backed up offsite via BackBlaze.
14 TB, to accommodate your current library size and future growth.
I have an 8TB drive for music, plus two additional 8TB drives for backup: one on-site, one off. These are rotated every few weeks. I also use BackBlaze. Four copies of everything is probably overkill, so I’ll probably drop back to @Andrew_Webb’s model when I next upgrade my drives.
I’m amazed at the size of these drives and storage capacities. 14 TB? Jiminy!
I don’t have too much downloaded music, but I’ve ripped all my CDs as FLAC files (850 albums or so), and I haven’t even used up one Terabyte.
The rest I stream from Qobuz/Tidal.
I have about 1500 LPs, too, but I haven’t needledropped/ripped anything.
I store my music on a Synology NAS which backs up to Backblaze.
I have a measly 2.17 TB of music FWIW (2004 lossless albums and boxsets). I’m a bit paranoid about data loss and potential Roon outages, so I use Syncthing to keep my main Roon server (with a 4TB SSD) in sync with backup servers (also with 4TB SSD) on two locations that I spend time at. All my servers offer DLNA in case Roon goes on the blink (pretty rare). Last, I backup the main server to a cloud service, IDrive.
Why exactly?
4Tb SSD in ROCK/NUC then 2 x 4Tb USB BU drives current around 3Tb of data.
I made a policy decision to minimize the amount “On line” and to use Tidal for anything else when I set up the NUC , it cuts down “screen time” and maintenance . I store the removed ones on a 4tb HDD with 2 x 4Tb USB for BU . I removed things like duplicates , old poor quality recordings and the really big Mozart, Bach & Beethoven sets which in many cases duplicated recordings . Incidentally Roon does not handle these well.
If Tidal “fails me” I can always restore them to the Roon library.
I have my old PC (ex Core) with 2 x 4Tb HDD , one BU from the ROCK/NUC and another for “other” files.
Don’t know why but I have always been hesitant to go to Mega Drives like a 14Tb .I stuck at 2,3 & 4Tb for audio and video.
For each data drive there are 2 external USB BU drives.
Thought I’d add my two cents that Syncthing is a great piece of software. Highly recommended.
