My DAC iFi Go Blu don’t appear in the audio device with Roon Remote app with iPhone

Hello everyone,

As a Roon user, please help me for
some bit problems in my musical configuration that I don’t recognize.

I don’t know how to complete the setup for the multi room configuration for add a third room with an home theater system Sony HT-RT3 (it hasn’t ethernet port, but input with USB, Bluetooth, and analog 3,5 mm + HDMI out and 2.1 speakers).

Roon Server Machine

NAS Synology DS720+, with CPU Intel Celeron quad core J4125, 6 Gbyte RAM , OS DSM 7.2.1
with ROCK in the internal HDDs SATA 2x 8Tbyte and M.2 512 Gbyte for caching.
The lag in music reproduction with Roon Remote and Roon Arc are tollerable, sometimes.

Networking Gear & Setup Details

The LAN is a 1 Gbit and Wi-fi 6, with Router Synology WRX-560 added (for extend wi-fi in the home with some mesh point) at the main router Vodafone Station FTTC (with wi-fi disable). Non VPN.

Connected Audio Devices

With an iPhone 15 pro (iOS 17.2) I use naturally Roon ARC and Roon Remote, with 3 endpoint RoonTested for multiroom: Home Theater 7.1 Roon Marantz NR1711 in the living room, AppleTV 4K in the kitchen with Home Theater and Apple TV 4 in the bedroom (for this I don’t if the HDMI out is fully ARC capable) with Home Theater 2.1 Sony HT-RT3.

Number of Tracks in Library

About 260.000 tracks signed by Roon Remote, in MP3 various bitrate, with about 5% of FLAC with various bitrate. A bit disorder for the idTags and names, perhaps
With 3 main apps, however the HD feature isn’t middles for the easy of use that I prefer (Apple Music, Amazon Music and Synology DSaudio that are bundles), beyond the superlatives Roon Apps again in trial but for sure prosecutions in subscription.

Description of Issue

I’m using, with a basic satisfaction, the multiroom features of Roon Remote with the recognized Marantz in the living room and Apple TV 4K in the kitchen, with relative Home Theater System (the Marantz even with a Philips Hue Sync box connected, for the ambiental color lightnings in synchronous with music).
I’ve grouped this two streamers (Marantz and AppleTV+Onkyo)
but I don’t make the same with the AppleTV4 + Sony HT-RT3.

Initially, I’ve try to connect the AppleTV with Sony with HDMI cable (HD), but no music sound outing by the Sony with HDMI source selected, (although, in another test, the streaming icon in iPhone AirPlay with Apple Music app in playing show bands moving in bpm synchro, but no sounds comes out on the speakers by the Sony). If I connect iPhone in Bluetooth with the Sony or with a cable from usb-c ports of iPhone and an adaptor to the jack input, the sounds arrived to the speakers, but without AirPlay.

The Roon Remote app don’t see the AppleTV4 in bedroom (connected with LAN Cable), only the Apple TV 4K and Marantz (all with the LAN cable, not wi-fi).

Then, I’ve buyed a little good DAC, even for enhance the HD features, the iFi Go Blu that is signed RoonTested.

Inserting the DAC in the signal path, between AppleTV4 and Sony, again not have any recognize from Roon Remote in the zone settings of volume or in the audio tab of the settings item in left lateral bar of the same Roon Remote App.

I’ve try to connect the DAC at Sony with the jack cable, and even with the USB cable (even if this is wrong, because the USB-A port of Sony is for tradional USB players or USB pen, and the USB-C of the Go Blu is an input port, not an output, at least as far as I understand so far).
I’ve try even connect Apple TV 4 with DAC as bluetooth audio output, with the jack cablo between DAC and the Sony, but again Roon Remote show only the RoonReady Marantz and the Roon Tested Apple TV4K that are in the other rooms, but not against the Apple TV 4 or the DAC in bedroom (iPhone, however, in Apple Music output of this app, show the DAC in the above AirPlay group of AirPlay section, not in the generic bluetooth bottom section).

Now, between the things that i don’t understand, is just the fact that iOs detect the DAC as AirPlay but Roon Remote App don’t recognize those AirPlay devices (DAC and Apple TV 4 in bedroom), although - for example - if I move the same Apple TV 4 in kitchen and connect that at TV by HDMI (through Onkyo home theater system), the same Apple TV 4 appears in the zone’s devices of the Room Remote App and the songs regularly sounds.

Well, I hope of clearly illustrated the problem and the different items of my system, and that the situation isn’t too complex.

I therefore kindly ask you for any advice that can help me complete this configuration to get all these three rooms of the apartment musically united in musical reproduction by Roon Remote App.

And I thank you enormously for all this.

Luciano

I think the problem might be that when using Roon for multi Roon playback all the devices must be using the same protocol.
For example all AirPlay or all Roon Ready.
You can’t simultaneously play to a Roon Ready device and an AirPlay device.

Well, ok, but sure that the DAC iFi Go Blu is Roon Ready? perhaps is Roon Tested, even if this DAC isn’t in the official Roon page of Roon Tested iFi devices https://roon.app/it/partners/44/ifi

iPhone connected to this DAC, by Bluetooth or even with USB-CtoC cable, determine that audio output section of iOs (through the control center) show the DAC in the AirPlay group.

If it is as you say, then i should found a solution with Apple TV 4 but without the Go Blu, even if with the DAC the results would be more impressive

A Roon Ready device must have a network connection and be certified to support RAAT.
This DAC only has a USB input.

iFi have a large number of their products listed as Roon Tested, so it likely the Go Blu will be certified as Roon Tested at some point but it can never be a Roon Ready device.

If you have it connect to an iPhone that’s running the Roon App, then it can be seen as a RAAT Zone on Roon (as the iPhone is managing the RAAT networking protocol). However, by default the Zone is listed a private so it’s hidden from other Roon Remotes (as typically the device is only control locally).

Check out this help page …

IMPORTANT if the iPhone is using RAAT and ATV4 using AirPlay you can not them group them.
As @Placebophile said, Zone grouping required each device to be using the same network protocol …

There is a Roon help page on this as well …

Ok, thanks for the links, Carls, I’ve read them: are interesting.
When I tested de iFi Go Blu DAC I’ve done a group zone between the Marantz and the ATV4k, such as AirPlay grouped endpoint.
The DAC isn’t visible to Roon Remote although is an AirPlay device (imho). I don’t know if is a Roon Remote problem of there is a mismatch in the configuration tested.
I expected that the third AirPlay endpoint (the DAC), had been recognized by Roon Remote as AirPlay device, or recognized with an error message that explane that is of different type respect the other two endpoint.
Can be a malfunctioning of Roon Remote (or of the ROCK in the Synology NAS, as substrate) that not recognize a third AirPlay endpoint?

I don’t find AirPlay mentioned on the Go Blu product page at all

It’s true. Is the iPhone with iOS 17 that insert this DAC in the AirPlay section of the audio output: ehen I connect the DAC to iPhone (with Bluetooth or USB C-to-C cable) the DAC appears in the AirPlay pop-up section (the audio output pop-up by the icon

IMG_4474

shows first the Bluetooth device connected and after in the list the AirPlay audio device connected).

Therefore I suppose that even Roon Remote should be find the DAC as AirPlay endpoint. But I’m not sure of this and would like know if someone use the Go Blu with iPhone and Roon Remote with multiroon feature.

This is a screenshot that show iFi Go Blu as AirPlay device in Apple Music app

and those the screenshot in Roon Remote

Isn’t only a group zone problem, but first again is a problem of missed AirPlay device in Roon Remote:

Apple Music app recognize the DAC as AirPlay (with Bluetooth connection from iPhone and the DAC and linked connection by jack output from the DAC and the home theatre system);

with the same connections (bluetooth + cable jack) Roon Remote don’t find the DAC in the AirPlay endpoint devices list. In such mode i have some doubt for the Roon-tested feature of the DAC, since that this DAC don’t appear in the official page of Roon-tested device of iFi officiale site:

As Roon-tested device, it should be in the official page of Roon Partners Program

https://roon.app/it/partners/44/ifi

but there isn’t there.

And in the iFi Go Blu page linked by the very kind Suedkiez, the section of Roon is that in this screenshot:

Perhaps, if I Go Blu DAC is designed only for the mobility app ( RoonArc ) but not for the Roon Remote.

Now, my question is: anyone have used this portable DAC with Roon Remote? Or this is compatible only with RoonArc?

Hi,

Roon’s official partners page is automated updated from their certification database, if a device is not listed it’s not certified.

I’ve scoured the iFi site and couldn’t find a statement from them claiming this device is Roon Test … could you point me to where you read it.

Then I can raise this with Roon’s partners team to investigate.

AirPlay requires wifi which the Blu does not have.
I’m not sure why your Blu is appearing under the AirPlay section on your iPhone as it’s not an AirPlay device (but note the Bluetooth icon there).
Your Roon signal path indicates the Blu is connected via Bluetooth which is correct (unless it was connected by USB)

I have an iPhone and an iFi Gryphon and don’t see it under AirPlay - as it doesn’t have wifi either.

Edit: Just realized your example of AirPlay is using Apple Music.
I don’t have Apple Music so I can’t check how my Gryphon shows up there but as our devices don’t have wifi they shouldn’t show up under AirPlay.
This is an Apple bug.

Contrary to its name Apple AirPlay is network protocol, the network does not have to be WiFi … hardwired is fine (arguably better as less problematic).

Ah yes. You are correct.

But as the Go Blu doesn’t have networking capability it won’t work using AirPlay.

Edit: I could be wrong.
Roon>AirPlay>iPhone>Bluetooth>Go Blu
Is what I think OP is trying to accomplish but I’ve never been able to get something like that to happen.

This is on Android however airplay capable endpoints are shown in the Roon remote app.
I have the iFi Go Blu, normally I just use it with ARC and Bluetooth, but I just plugged it in via USB and the Roon remote app doesn’t recognise it as an airplay device, it’s not listed in the Roon remote app at all.

Screen shot shows ARC and there are presets for Bluetooth and USB.
I’ve not listened to it via USB I just use Bluetooth as this is just for when in the street when I don’t want to plug anything in.

Thanks Carl, I don’t sure if it is a RoonTested, I suppose that because in the official page of iFi Go Blu there is the claim at the use of this DAC with Roon as shown in this screenshot:

But, perhaps, is only for mobility use (then RoonArc).

In this case, then, it isn’t a certified support from iFi Go Blu at Roon but only utilization, by RoonArc, of the normal iOS functions (wired and bluetooth connection to the DAC for the musical stream).

Perhaps, iOS had AirPlay section output as protocol, as Carl specified.
As you noted, in AirPlay section, appears Bluetooth icon in the row of iFi Go Blu, and if I off Bluetooth and connect DAC to iPhone with USB cable the Bluetooth icon in the row change in headset icon.

Ehm, imho, this OP is just so in RoonARC, because in Roon Remote I don’t found any mode for recognize and use the Go Blu

Yes, I think they are saying it is for use with ARC only.

The iFi Go Blu is a portable Bluetooth DAC intended to connect to your phone by Bluetooth with a wired connection to your headphones. It is for mobile use which means Roon ARC if using with Roon.

“Our new GO blu , pocket-rocket portable HD DAC/amp, is diminutive enough to take with you wherever you go! It gives you best sound from wired but the convenience of wireless as you no longer need to have a cable connection to your smartphone.”

The iFi Roon blurb only mentions Bluetooth (and I suppose the „Blu“ in the name is a hint as well)

I have an ifi Go Blu and it connects via Bluetooth on my iPhone with Roon 1.8 Legacy and via USB-C cable to my Mac (unfortunately it doesn’t connect via Lightning-USB-C cable wired with my iPhone).
I don’t use multiroom because I am listening with my headphones only – I only have one endpoint.
