@Quaerit One of the things about the internet is that there are so many opinions on both sides of a topic: room correction being one of them. For every “it’s not great” as you are suggesting, there are as many “it’s fantastic” posts. Hard to navigate.
I wouldn’t buy the Arcam just to get Dirac - I could just add a MiniDSP instead - but it does have Roon/AP2 when it ships and those are important to me. Yes, can get those by adding a RPi endpoint but having everything integrated makes it simpler for family acceptance. Biggest concern I have is comments about Arcam reliability.
The AVRs seem particularly problematic (Google is your friend), HDMI handshake issues, HDMI boards commonly fail (both of my recent ones had this), my AVR280 had the power supply go as well. Maybe the stereo stuff is better (I had an alpha 6 back in the day which was rock solid), but it doesn’t breed confidence in the brand, and they’ve lost at least one long-time customer as a result.

Indeed the stereo amps live forever, a great eBay certainty.
Both H590 and H390 has ROON now so H190 should probably get it soon too.
The H390 and H590 does not yet have Roon. They are waiting. Just like the H190 and H120. The delay is on our side.
I thought so. Roon is available via AirPlay though.
Can you indicate the approximate quarter of 2020 when H190 (or successor) will be supported? It will lower WAF (wife acceptance factor) in my case…
Another option (until Hegel release Roon-ready endpoint support) may be to use Roon’s Logitech Media Server (LMS) support with a LMS to UPnP bridge.
There are hardware options (eg Small Green Computers/Sonore offer this feature on some of their products) and software options (eg the LMS UPnPBridge plugin).
I’m currently using the standalone variant of the LMS UPnPBridge running on my Core server (ie the plugin runs standalone with out LMS server) with an older Naim NDX streamer that supports UPnP/DLNA but not Roon. This works well enough (once configured correctly) and sounds great, such that I no longer use my Allo DigiOne into the NDX’s SPDIF input.
That said:
- I don’t own any Hegel gear (I am considering an H190 or H390 hence I was reading this thread with interest), so I can’t say for sure that it will work with Hegel’s UPnP/DLNA implementation.
- From what I can gather Hegel’s UPnP/DLNA endpoint may not support gapless (the Naim NDX does and this feature works with the LMS UPnPBridge plugin configured in passthrough mode).
- This option require some tech-savvyness (to install and configure the UPnPBridge - there are many ways to do this on Windows, Linux, etc, and many configuration items, thought the defaults generally work well), and there is some extra configuration in Roon Core (enable LMS support, and then disable FLAC compression on the LMS device in Roon to get true passthrough).
This is correct (for the H190 at least). It was the reason I moved to Roon and an ultraRendu, which is a great solution.
Anyone know why I often randomly get double versions of my Hegel H390 listed in the Airplay devices in the Audio settings? Usually listed with a (2) after the name as a duplicate endpoint.
And then Airplay stops functioning until I reboot the system and my Roon Core. Frustrating.
AirPlay as endpoint with Roon works great with the H190. Try a factory reset of the H390 and se if it solves the problem?
Agreed never had a problem with the H190. If not already doing it, you could also try reserving an IP address on your network for the H390.
Usually the dual endpoints listed have the same IP address. I will take a screenshot next time it happens.
Hi Anders. Are we expecting something before 2021? Thanks.
Yes we are. Hoping to be able to provide more precise news soon
So all we have is a hope … of ‘more precise news’. Not an announcement. Nor would it take much to be more precise than anything Hegel have said to date.
2021 it is then.
I think they just don’t want to disappoint further. Quietly hoping they are under-promising and overdeliver with RAAT and AP2 in quick succession.
Hi Anders. MQA support question: Does the H390 output MQA over co-axial when DAC loop is enabled or does it perform first decode? Thanks.
Hi. I havent tested this myself, so had to ask one of the engineers. He says that it should send out MQA and not do anything to change the signal as such. Meaning no decoding in the amp prior to digital out
