Need Desktop Access to Roon Library from Multiple Locations (ref#S10Y9C)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

Tell us what's going on

· I am using roon in a professional setting. I need to be able to have DESKTOP access to my library from both my home studio and control room at my facility. I was hoping Tailscale would allow me to do this but I have had no luck. If there were an ARC Desktop App that would be really helpful, or even a way to "sign into ARC when away from home" on the desktop app. I am not willing to purchase second license and have a second library - I need it to just "work" and while ARC is great, I need to be referencing mixes through my studio setup and airplay isn't an acceptable workaround - I need to be able to reference items on my home system and my control room monitor a/b and roon has been really helpful for adding files to my local library - please help! Make this happen.

This is not something Roon Support can do. You should post this in Feature Request.

The easiest way to do this that I can think of is to run Roon server on a laptop and carry that back and forth with you.

If this is the case then you are hobbling yourself and probably the only option is to have a portable setup as described above, or to have a portable library and two servers which you would authorize/de-authorize in turn.

There are options available to accommodate the requirements here, but it falls outside of what the product can do. Discussion about it would require this thread to be moved to Tinkering

If you’re happy tinkering you can make it work through VPNs but, expect hours of annoyance and setup to get to a point where it works.

Roon uses UDP broadcast/multicast for discovery, which doesn’t cross network boundaries. So, with this in mind Tailscale is out of the question, you’d have to explore Linux and RoonRelay. Search on GitHub.

There are other ways using Wiregaurd, but you’d need to explore other people’s guides and posts on here.

If it’s all Apple Products you can use ARC, and send the audio through a MacBook/Mac or even access your phone through MacOS. If as you say, AirPlay etc, isn’t suitable. Then to be honest, this software doesn’t sound like it fits your needs. But, this doesn’t mean you can’t explore.

Hello @cfenning,

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

What you’re describing — desktop access to a single Roon library from multiple physical locations — is not an officially supported use case in Roon at this time. Roon is designed around a single, local Roon Server with remote access provided via ARC (mobile only).

Solutions involving VPNs, Tailscale, WireGuard, relay services, or similar approaches fall outside supported configurations and typically require custom networking and manual workarounds.

For that reason, we’re going to move this thread to the Tinkering category, where community members share experimental and unsupported setups. That will be the best place to continue this discussion and explore possible workarounds.

If you’d like to request official support for a desktop ARC–style solution in the future, we recommend submitting this as a Feature Request.
