New Nucleus One - Transfer Music without setting up Roon Account yet?

Hello,

I’ve purchased a Nucleus One for my Dad for Christmas, along with a 2tb SSD. My mother has arranged to hand me a copy of his whole digital library, which is quite large. Is there any way I can transfer the local music to the ssd and have the Nucleus One ready to go on Christmas morning? I am planning on buying him a year of Roon, but as soon as I do that, it’ll ruin the surprise. Is there a way to do this before I set up the account for him, or will it have to wait?

Thanks!

(Would have created this under support, but the submission method seems broken for me and returns a 400 Bad Gateway error.)

You can get SATA to USB adaptors which should allow you to copy the files onto the SSD drive using your PC or laptop.

The other option is to install the SSH in the Nucleus and connect to it over the network via SMB file sharing. You should then be able to do that even without a Roon account as it happens at the OS level, not within Roon itself.

He’ll still need to wait for Roon to scan the files once he logs in, but assuming his files are tagged well and the any multi-part albums are named correctly, it should be pretty much ready to go.

Would you need the account setup for the WEB UI to do the SSD format?

Good point, can’t speak to the Nucleus, but with ROCK you can access the web interface without logging into your Roon account.

As with so many of these kinds of posts, at this point — as long as the OP is OK with opening the box — try it, no reason why it shouldn’t work and you’ll be no worse off if it doesn’t.

Can’t you just create a Roon trial with another email address to set the nucleus up?

Databases are linked to the account address.

Forget the internal drive, get an external drive or put the SSD in an external enclosure. Then you can pre-load the music onto the external drive. On Christmas, you can setup Roon with your dad and plug in the external drive and go.

As others have said, the initial period while the RoonServer analyses the music will take awhile depending on how much music there is, so the experience will by choppy until that is done.

Thank you all for your help.

This is about what I expected, given the nature of how Roon works. It’s okay. I will just plan to transfer everything over on Christmas morning. At least that way, I can spin the gift into a father/son project for the day.

Don’t forget you can’t backup the database to an internal drive. So, get another external drive for database backups, or, my suggestion of using an external drive for the music AND a backup location, or, setup a network share on some other computer your father has to be a backup location.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Luckily my Dad is pretty tech savvy, so I will be able to set up a network share backup solution and have him troubleshoot when necessary. I like the idea of getting an additional external drive, if nothing else than to backup the music collection.

Yep, backups are good, just remember that you cannot copy directly to/from an external USB drive on the Nucleus to an internal drive. All copying must be done via the network.

Has a USB attached SSD been mentioned for automatic database backups? Samsung T5 works well for me. I see the Samsung T7 SSD at Best Buy for 89.99. That would make a great stocking stuffer.
