New streaming service(s) coming in 2023

Everything on Apple TV is output 48/24 i believe regardless of source sample rate.

It will be handing off to HomePod and that will carry on. No non Apple hardware supports handoff.

Airplay 2 is CD lossless quality on other apps. Only Apple Music and their Classical app stream in 256k aac over Airplay 2. So that’s why other apps sound better. If you were to do a wired setup with Apple Music, then you could achieve 192/24 hires. Not that it really matter but not sure if the HomePod are playing anything higher than CD quality. This would only matter if they eventually get digital out added.

I’ve tried Apple Music directly hooked up to my Naim HE and it sounds great but then lose all the streaming features. No album art, no playback controls. Has to be controlled thru the app. And also have cord coming out of iPad mini the whole time. Maybe if wasn’t already lifetime roon member, might make sacrifice and just use Apple Music but not worth when roon/Qobuz so much easier.

Apple Music is lossless over iPhone and iPad. It’s high resolution lossless with an attached DAC. Don’t use airplay.

This is incorrect. This has been proven by Naim tech and few others on different streamers using Airplay 2. It seems it streams at 256k regardless what the app shows. They have posted the logs and screenshots. And they show same log sending cd quality I believe for Qobuz over Airplay 2. The interesting thing is the other apps output using the legacy AirPlay signal vs Airplay 2. So those other app are lossless.

Sorry read your post wrong. But who wants to directly hook up ipad or iPhone to their streamer. Wireless over Airplay should be lossless. Heck 15 years ago I was using AirPort Express to stream lossless music from my Mac.

Well, I do. Depends on your listening room and how far you actually sit from your DAC. A USB cable dangling from my iPad doesn’t really bother me.

Alternatively, you can use a recent Apple computer as receiver of airplay via iPhone or iPad, and select your streamer (needs to work with Airplay of course) as output via system, and you will get CD quality through Airplay. Not so very different from using Roon (you also need a computer or a Nucleus). Of course, you’ll be limited to 16/44.1.

Not saying that you’re wrong. Apple’s implementation of redbook streaming (not to mention hi-res files) is far from optimal.

The reason streamers came about was to avoid this kind of Heath Robinson affair. It feels like going back to the early days when all that was possible was to hook your iPod or phone to a dock to stream.

Interestingly, I think I’d like to have podcasts integrated on Roon. Not in the messy way Spotify does it, but beautifully! A podcast section, similar to the Live Radio, would mean I could stay in Roon for (nearly) everything.

That was my first iPod. Donated it to my sister, when I bought a different one.

Yes, I forgot there are so many ways you can have your setup. I use to just have a headphone setup sitting next to the iMac and used the optical out they had years ago. And then for a while used iPhone with camera connector into Chord Hugo 2. It’s just in last few years of owning the Naim HE and setting it up wirelessly in the living room that the idea of using a wired setup seems like such a backward setup. And the idea of having to do that to get even cd quality seems a step back when I’ve been streaming 192/24 files wirelessly with roon for years with no issues. And coming from Apple, the thought that they’re asking to use a wired setup in 2023 doesn’t seem right.

I run my HE on Ethernet, but for a week when we were decorating the lounge I had to run on WiFi I was pleasantly surprised

Obviously some WiFi implementations are good. My CA CXN used to struggle on WiFi hi res under the same conditions

I stream hires to my Fiio M11 Plus daily over Wi-Fi not a single issue even wandering the house with it it’s rock solid.

I couldn’t disagree more. I think some love Qobuz, some Tidal and some would love Apple Music. Possibly many more than the current offerings.

Roon are in discussions with the team at Apple Music. They are not with the team at Spotify. As for Amazon, that even looks less likely.

Apple Music, bring it on!

There are more than 12.

19 by my count.

Those 12 are on Qobuz and Tidal, so your claim that she isn’t on streaming services isn’t correct.

Well I’m sorry I didn’t specify that they are not all there. So only 36.8% are not there. Happy now?
