New streaming service(s) coming in 2023

While I am happy with TIDAL, it is not available in Japan (I use my European account), and that means I cannot link it to Alexa, cannot link it to Sonos, … it only works with Roon.
This is ok for me, but not for other family members who rely on voice commands :frowning:

OTOH, Qobuz is going to enter the Japanese market in December (planned), that should make it available to SONOS, Alexa, and of course Roon.

Thus, I will probably switch from TIDAL to Qobuz when that happens.

@Norbert_Preining,

At the risk of going way off topic, I wonder whether this may be relevant: when I first subscribed to Qobuz the omni-present ‘Sébastien’ explained to me that use of a VPN with Qobuz was strictly prohibited; and that anyone whom they found to be doing so would be banned for life and never allowed to re-subscribe.

Presumably this is to allow strict enforcement of national copyright laws.

Just in case such a stricture is still in place and may apply in your case. Good luck  .

I never used VPNs  I lived in Austria before and opened a TIDAL account there, and I can use it in Japan without any problems. Not sure about Qobuz.

Norbert,

Then I’m sure you’ll be OK

Just a tip in case you planned to use an account registered in one country (as far as Qobuz is concerned) but used in another. I have no view either way about Qobuz’s apparent business practices. And can see that this is OT for this thread. Just a thought  Good luck!

People have posted that it works the same way on Qobuz. To open an account, you must use a credit card that has a billing address in the supported country. After you have created the account, you can stream from anywhere in the world.

My guess is that Roon and KKBOX getting together was to solve this issue. Both Tidal and Qobuz are not well represented in Asia. KKBOX is.

I wonder if the Harman acquisition will open doors to new streaming options.

It does if they strip down Roon to software that doesn’t integrate both your music files and the music service .

The new acquisition might help push Amazon in more of a Roon direction. but that’s the only one worth development time other than Deezer which pulled out of planning for it. The others are just so niche and small can’t see them able to deliver the goods Roon needs of the subcriber numbers.

Apple isn’t going to happen ever that route has been closed off due to their restrictions imposed to Roon of it being only available to Apple products and not use their audio engine. Spotify it’s not in their interests for 3rd party access no on gets that anymore only Sonos has it as a legacy as it allowed them a way to get a foothold in the early days, same way Sonos was allowed Apple Music way back (not lossless though)

Only way I see a lot more western ones being added is if Harman forces a change to how it currently works which is then breaking one of Roon fundmental SP its source agnostic policy for how it manages all your music sources.

I imagine we will see other eastern providers if they can get them on board, which I am sure Harman/Samsung have some sway to achieve.

KKBOX being an Eastern provider already being onboard. No idea if there are other similar sized ones available in that area.

There is Danny mentioned one in the takeover thread but can’t remember or be arsed to search for it. I thibk KKbox is Taiwanese and not Korean.

Just curious
What does VIYNL mean?

Is it a new streaming service or does it refer to Roon Ready Relay turntables?
