New (was back in 2021) iFi Zen Stream device

Wow! Many thanks for your tips @Steven_Klemow ! Will definitely try this! Many thanks :pray:t2:

I guess will also work for NAA on HQPlayer right?

Also, are you also using a Mac?

Thanks

Not having a dac in SPDIF, I simply blocked the loading of the spdif module (driver) (via SSH).
The ZS only runs as a NAA / USB device (minimum services, no led, no update, etc).
Roon >> HQPlayer >> NAA (ZS)
Just On/Off and enjoy !!

Hi @Steven_Klemow I’ve followed all steps except the 2.138 Beta update, and the loop is still on, it still gets back to DSD over PCM (DoP), capped to 128k

ifi-streamer-loop

In any case, much appreciated your help, I’m fine for 128K although I’m exploring the option of an NAA on Pi4 with HQPlayer and ifi Purifier (a similar feature on streamer).

Many thanks for everyone’s comments and support. I’m actually doing 50% configuration play and 50% music enjoyment! Both are quite fun!!

Due to the very positive feedback here about the ZS I will finally get one too, along with the iFi iPower Elite 12V which should be an ideal companion as some already reported.

The amp/DAC is a Devialet, which I think will connect via SPDIF / RCA rather than USB. Hopefully there will be an AES/EBU connection in a ZS 2.0 update which also many prefer.

Markus nice to have you join us andbhopefully it will go smoothly for you.
Remember in Roon Only mode there is an improvement in SPDIF output (especially if you want 24/192)

We have talked here about a Stream Pro as well and what that might bring, and still be at a good price.

Thanks - yep will run with Roon exclusive mode.

And ya there is definitely a demand for a Stream Pro version and very much looking forward to what iFi is coming up after this 1st basic release.

Did you update the Zen?

I leave mine on, unless I’m going away for a spell.

So are you saying you prefer to connect your Zen via USB than with SPDIF?

Hi @Michael_Harris from your experience using ifI streamer, would it cause any issues if I put this ā€œifiā€ filter at the end? Although the streamer has same tech embedded?

I’m doing this to test my DAC with different NAA endpoints one is using ifi Streamer other using Pi4 as NAA.

Here is the filter:

I have not used the iFi version but I did test the audioquest Jitterbug, and as you said the technology is already in the Stream so it made no discernible difference.

But before I had the Stream and was using my Room server Nuc as a streamer and various Pi’s, I bought a couple of Audioquest Jitterbug and cinnamon USB cables and iFi power supply for the Pi and to me as a combination they made a very good difference in audio quality, whether it was real or placebo I can’t honestly say.
But in Audio spend it was practically free to test it.

So overall I would not really use it with the Stream, but it could be useful on another device

Makes totally sense. Many thanks!

Yes, not really used.
On an RPI, why not but I prefer the iFi iSilencer.
On the ZS, the remaining gain is not at that level and you have to be careful with the cognitive bias (@Steven_Klemow).

I became obsessed with accessing Roon outside my home. I am experimenting with tailscale, but iOS create issues with the audio output in Roon when using a VPN. The experiment I just conducted (and failed) was installing a tail scale on the iFi Stream. You SSH into the Stream and install tailscale. It installs, and I can connect the node externally to the VPN… but Roon will not ā€œdetectā€ the Stream.
For future references, I run tailscale in my Roon server with exit node and subnet active. The Stream is running as a client (I installed it using the instructions for Devian Bullseye). I can SSH into it, so I don’t know what the issue with Roon core is.

Sadly most of us have been here at one time or another (and most have given up in frustration).
As soon as I leave the house I use PlexAmp as it just work’s. Yes I lose my play history etc, but I gain Sonic radio which is great.

There are a couple of thread’s on the forum’s for getting Roon working with VPNs but they are all hack’s.

I eventually chose to wait for Roon mobile, it will be here one day.

Seems iFi is close ahead of releasing something new. Could be hardware or software. Let’s see.

Maybe the Stream pro plus that we all joked about earlier this year with built in DAC and headphones out

Whatever it is I am sure it will get a lot of coverage

Based on? Link?

That is true @Michael_Harris. I spent most of my free time this week going down that rabbit hole. I will wait for Roon’s mobile and use Plex in the meanwhile.

It really isn’t a bad place to be, even if we really wanted Roon Mobile in 2020
Two weeks on PlexAmp and really enjoyed using it, but one day back home and absolutely love Roon again
