Update: I may have been too optimistic about playing files off the USB. Not sure what changed but now after a couple of tracks the ZS fails to move on to the next and just stalls. Add that to the list of bugs to be fixed.
Iām down to just 4ā¦for now..
And all the colours of the Rainbow in-between as well as black!
had a chance to hook up the replacement unit that TREO sent to me. plays great for a hour or 2 but than the music stops and i loose the IFI icon in both the ROON/Tidal app. and the Spotify app. also the Zen Stream will power down and i will have to press the power button to get the lights to go on again. i go back into Roon and now see that the NAD DAC is now present again in the ROON app. i press play and the track plays. however there is no sound. so to remedy this i go back into the Spotify app. and select the IFI icon since is again appears. i press play and the the Spotify track will commence with sound. i than go back into the ROON app. and commence play and the track will now play with sound. strange!! frustration continues.
i agreed to have them send me a replacement unit since they would not refund me. i have opened a dispute for the units, and the shipping cost by DHL since they missed up the duty charges and it took a week to sort out and delayed delivery. TREO would not claim the DHL guarantee as the shipper btw.
Following an internet outage, Roon no longer sees the Zen. It appears that Roon Bridge is not launching/running, even though itās toggled on in services. Roon can see (but not play to) the Zen via airplay.
I have rebooted everything on the network, did several factory resets on the Zen, and tried toggling Roon on and off in the Ifi app. I have tried running the Zen in AIO and Roon Exclusive mode. No luck with any of it.
Iām connected to my Dac via usb and that connection is good. I can play radio from the Ifi app. When I first got the Zen, it just popped right up as a source choice in Roon. Now, nothing. Iām running the latest version 9/30 of the Zen firmware.
Please advise on what can try. Without Roon, the Zen is doorstop for me.

A bit of a left field option here, is that if the rest of it is working and you have factory reset it, go to
Roon->Settings->Audio and see if the device is there and can be enabled again.
Also do you use Spotify, Tidal etc with it (not that I recommend that, but just to see if they work)
Thanks Michael. The Zen appears in Roon if I turn on airplay, but thatās not how I want to use it. Like I wrote, it looks like Roon Bridge wonāt start on the Zen, but Iām at a loss on how to fix that.
Streaming without Roon is working just fine. I can play Internet radio from the ifi app. I donāt use Spotify.
Israel no problem I wanted to confirm that it was all working other than Roon.
If you cannot get it from a factory reset is there an option to do a format of the disk, I am away now for the next few days so I cannot check that
I guess no one here has attempted to run files off a USB drive with the ZS? Would be nice to hear a success story, or if anyone has the time to just try running some files off the ifi app using a USB drive and see how long before it stops playing.
Iāve opened up a ticket to see if I can get some assistance, but Iām getting some broad advice such as doing a factory reset which I have no interest in doing especially after getting the unit stable.
Iām wondering if shrinking the drive and having it as NTFS vs exFAT (default) would make a difference. I wish support would just tell me if this feature is not up to par just yet and will be addressed in a later update so Iām not wasting days troubleshooting this.
Iām away until the weekend, but I can try then.
How many fileās are you talking about. I have about 40k of music files am a backup disk.
That should do, but it ma be to much for the amount of memory the ZS has.
I will let you know.
I really understand you. I think most quirks is in all mode. The roon issue since I replaced the power supply by an IFi elite has been working more stable. I cross my fingers that it maintains this behavior.
But I stopped using as a main unit, now is on the system to give me another flavor of sound when needed.
Posting here in the hope of a helpful reply. Iāve given up over at head fi. So my issue is that the zen stream keeps forgetting the dac every time I switch it off ( connected via spdif). I have to hit the save button in the output menu every time I switch it back on, otherwise it wonāt āseeā my dac. Is this a known bug or just my unit is faulty?
Hi Sanj I have mine connected via USB to Zen Dac and via SPDIF to and FIIO K5 Pro and both work perfectly every time.
When I used to use a Pi I often had this problem after I turned the DAC Amp off and as it was in my study it wasnāt an issue as I just used to Power cycle it, but never had it with the Zen Stream.
From Roon the FIIO appears within a few seconds of me switching it from USB (Windows) to SPDIF.
There are plenty of other issues with the Zen but I havenāt seen that one. It might be DAC dependent, but letās see what others have to say.
Thanks for the reply Michael but maybe I shouldāve put my question more clearly. Its when I switch the zen stream off and then switch it on later is when the issue crops up. Not when I switch off the dac. My apologies for the misunderstanding.
Sanj ok I understand now, but definitely never seen that either.
Thatās exactly how I run mine with the Stream off when not in use and turned on only when needed. I run two outputās and switch between in Roon but the DAC is normally on as it has multiple inputs.
Could the DAC be going to sleep on the SPDIF and not waking up. I use the physical switches on my FIIO to then switch between windows and the Stream to play music, but even if it is left on SPDIF it always kickās back in and plays within a second or two.
I am assuming that you are not using Roon in that case, as Roon shows both outputās when they are engaged and I often switch between the outputs.
Are you using the web player or something else?
I am using roon. Here is a screenshot:
It says spdif, roon is playing but the coax light on the rme adi 2fs dac is blinking ( not locked). I now will have to stop the now playing track, open ifiās settings, hit save on the spdif selector and then replay the track in roon in order for the rme dac to lock on. This behaviour can be repeated with another dac, the ami ds5.
Hi Sanj
I can concur that I have a similar issue. On powering up my Zen Stream (connected via spdif to my pre with built in dac) and selecting a track to play via spdif, the stream indicates that a track is playing (green light on), but there is no output the dac. If I pause, then disable the ifi spdif output in Roon and then reenable again, then press play again, I am able to here music again.
I did log a call of ifiās support site about a month back, but still have had no response
No I have never seen this behavior at all, But clearly Grant is impacted by it as well.
I take it you are both on the late September firmware and if you go into Roon and settings->About that you have the latest Roon Bridge installed (1.8 build 814).
On my Stream which I just turned on and flicked the DAC setting to SPDIF I get this if I transfer a song in Roon. I only go into the web interface about once a month to check for a firmware update.
They both start playing within seconds of me transferring the music.
It is a strange one indeed.
As an experiment I connected a topping d10 via USB to the zen stream and connected the d10 spdif output to the rme dacās spdif input.
In this config the zen stream remembers the usb dac and the rmeās spdif remains locked on to the d10 always. So its clearly a spdif issue between the zen stream and the rme/adi dacs.
Oh yes, I went into roons about page and saw that the ifi roon Bridge needed an update. Updated to latest but the problem persists.
EDIT: Its working! It takes about 10 seconds after restart of the zen stream for the rme to lock on to it. I guess the bridge update did something. Thanks for the tip!
Iām so glad, I really love the zenās sound. Happy to have this niggle sorted and thank you once again.
The upshot of all this is that the rme sounds better via the topping d10, so Iām keeping it this wayš
Good news and happy to be of help
