New (was back in 2021) iFi Zen Stream device

Hi Michael. It was this one:

The router would update but the sat would not. That may have been part of the issue.

A few more reboots this morning and all endpoints, the Zen, NAD M10, a WiiM Mini, and an old Apple TV are all working again.

Phew.

Thanks for sharing that. I have RBR50, and and RBS50 and an RBS40 as well for the garden.
Currently I am sitting on V2.7.3.22 so I will stay on that for now. Having had some major issues early on I tend to keep an eye out now for major issues and vulnerabilities only.

They works great with my Virgin fiber router though in Modem mode and covers house and garden and gives me something to plug my switches into that feels like I have Ethernet across the whole house.

The ifi zen streamer is now listed as Roon Ready by Roon.
The ifi blog on Facebook says MQA is coming soon.

My Zen streamer has been working fine since December when I got it. I have the 12 Jan firmware. I see the bridge in roon and link to it. Is there a new firmware?

Yes Joel just use if.local/dev
Enable the beta update and then go back and check for new firmware.
It will update to the Roon Ready version

Please read some of the post’s above about a couple of potential gothchas that may be there. Has not affected me but YMMV

How do I enable the beta update.
If this is a diasaster, Can I go back to the 12 Jan firmware by doing a factory reset and then updating?

I have not seen the ability to roll back.

To enable the update go here http://ifi.local/dev/

iFi Streamer Test Player

Enable this link and then go to

http://ifi.local/plugin/system_controller-system
And select check updates

Mine is currently on 2.31.6 and it seems to work pretty well

Thanks. It is working so far. What do you have MQA at?
Joel

Mine has been working beautifully since July of last year…only minor hiccups initially due to a faulty SMPS (which iFi replaced at no cost or further inconvenience to me). I just switched back to ā€œAIOā€ mode, but nothing new since January 12th in the ā€œstableā€ release.

I appreciate @Michael_Harris’s updates on the beta program, but I’m sticking with stable for the ZEN Stream. I do plenty of bleeding-edge testing in other areas, so I need my Roon Outputs to be solid.

I do see the updated zone icon in the control apps. That’s a nice touch. I’m happy to wait for the final release of the firmware for the rest.

What I’m hoping to see with a full Roon SDK integration is a complete signal-path. Support for PCM sampling rates above 384 kHz (when supported by the DAC) would be nice, but I’m not holding my breath. (If not, default settings should reflect the 384 kHz limitation.) Same goes for native DSD support, which is missing for some of my DACs via the ZEN Stream. That, plus I’m hoping that the update does not break functionality that I currently enjoy.

Mainly, I’m hoping that iFi Audio learns from the trials and tribulations of releasing their first (real) Roon endpoint solution and does a much better job with the next one. This is a somewhat underserved area in the Roon ecosystem, so more recommendable products would be most welcome.

For my Zen DAC via USB I have the following:

And Advanced settings as below

David no argument from me there.

I have stated elsewhere it’s not for everyone and there are caveats, but for those that want it and are prepared to accept there be Dragons on the beta side it’s pretty good

Staying on the stable release is fine, with the following caveats:

The beta is very stable, other than when changing the hardware dial on the back from ā€œAIOā€ to ā€œRoon Exclusiveā€ā€”at this time that mode only supports S/PDIF connections and a maximum PCM of 192. However, the software toggles in the ZS GUI that turn off individual transport sources (Spotify & Tidal Connect, NAA, Sharepoint, DLNA, etc) override the hardware dial anyway, so there’s not much benefit to the exclusive mode that can’t be achieved by turning off the sources you don’t use.

Installing the beta upgrades the unit to ā€œRoon Readyā€ status, and iFi is currently working on fixing the Exclusive mode to support USB connections—but as long as you keep the hardware dial on AIO, everything works just fine.

The benefit of installing the beta is that the ZS is no longer supporting updates to the Roon Bridge—attempting to do so under the ā€œAboutā€ tab in Roon will result in an error. Thus keeping the January stable firmware will not allow you to take advantage of new features in Roon that have been added with the latest Bridge updates, and they’re considerable. Roon applies updates to Roon Ready devices automatically, and more frequently than they update bridges.

Beta firmwares are easily accessible by browsing to iFi.local/dev, enabling beta updates, then browsing back to iFi.local and checking for system upgrades.

I plan on posting status updates as iFi releases newer betas that resolve the issue above.

That will save me checking so often thanks.

I find that I leave it on AIO and disable all the services besides Roon and HQP and I have been very happy with that on the beta releases

The important thing is to accept it is a beta and not complain too loudly if it does break something (or when with iFi)

you can roll back; I have.

How did you roll back?
Why did you roll back?
So far I have no issues.

Hi Woodford I thought Zen were not making older versions publicly available.
Did you get them via support?
It would make it easier to test for people if they were publicly available though.

I just did a factory reset, and then checked for updates to the latest production version. worked seamlessly.

for now, I’ll wait for the beta to be finished.

OK good news and thanks for confirming.
I know a few people had issues with the factory reset and then not getting Roon Bridge properly set up.

Update:

There is a new firmware available that purports to ā€œfix Some runtime issues with Roonā€.

However, after installing it, the issues with exclusive mode and the other errors I mentioned in my last post persist.

I’ll reiterate that the beta is otherwise very stable with the exclusion of exclusive mode; things work fine on AIO.

Please note that if you rollback firmwares, you will not be able to update the bridge version any longer. Same if you don’t upgrade to the beta—updates to the bridge are no longer supported.

I’ll continue to post updates as they arise.

Thank you Steven, downloading it now
Very limited release notes, though I think we can be expecting a few more like that.

That’s not my experience. I resetted Zen Stream to factory setings a few times from 2.31.4, 2.31.6 & 2.31.7 and never had any problems with Roon Bridge updates.
