Hi all, this is a question that probably someone else asked before but I couldn’t find any topic about it.
My question is if Roon analyses the tracks coming from non identified albums, if those albums and tracks would be in a smart playlist or on Roon radio, played after a similar sonic track. I have a lot of good quality sound bootlegs on my musical library and some other non identified albums and I would like to be 100% sure that Roon analyses their sound as well and use them on smart playlists and Roon Radio too.
Roon does do sound analysis on all tracks, even those in unidentified albums.
The only thing that having an album “identified” does is contribute to enhanced metadata, from album reviews to release dates, and composition IDs that allow you to know how many versions of a composition or song you have in your collection, etc. All the rest of Roon’s functions like Smart Playlists still apply…although I am not sure how it works with Roon Radio, as that is sort of a black box. I have a hunch it works best with the enhanced metadata that identified albums wind up having.
If you’re right Rugby, this would be some kind of disappointment because for example, comparing to Plex Music, Plex does a sonic analysis to all the tracks and use them on Radio and Smart Playlists as well. On my experience with Roon, I would like to think that DDPS’s answer is closer to the right thing here but again, nobody is 100% sure. Thank you!!
For what it’s worth, I just performed an experiment. I have a 6 disc Doris Day collection where Disc 1 isn’t identified. I made a Doris Day Roon radio, and after 100 tracks or so (I stopped playing and just kept hitting “>”, one of the tracks from Disc 1 came up.
That makes sense, DDPS, it’s a great try. Still after 100 tracks is not a great number and of course, it depends of other variables, it’s the proof that Roon is taking in consideration tracks from non identified albums as well. Thank you for the try!
Well I have an enormous collection of related mid-century music, and a huge amount of other Doris Day and other related recordings showed up, so the algorithm worked well…but as you stated, the main point is that unidentified albums will show up in Roon Radio so long as they match other parameters.
