Now Playing Some Jazz [2021-2022]

Their core issue is that search in the style of web search does not know anything about identity (of artists, tracks, albums) but the Roon database is all about identity. There are ways to partly bridge the gab, but they require major investments (think Google or Microsoft) and in fact it’s still a research area without full solutions (trust me, I’ve been involved in this line of work for decades). It does not help that they use multiple metadata providers and the problem of de-duping repeated metadata entries is similarly hard (again, I’ve worked on this, including published technical papers).

Missed that earlier, I had already 8 of the 10 in the list, showing my avant-garde proclivities

Latest goodies, different styles for different folks:

Tonight’s Vinyl/Happy Hour is featuring some vintage 1974 McCoy Tyner. Very enjoyable recording with a fantastic group. Nicely recorded as well. Discogs Available on the Q/T

Note the Hunt E.D.A. Mark 6 Brush on the right hand side of the album cover. I’m surprised that the record sounds as good as it does given how often I played it over the years.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know it’s a double post but I couldn’t let this go without posting.
The late, great and underrated Alvin Batiste, whom I would call New Orleans’ answer to Los Angeles’ late, great and underrated John Carter. This album is on the India Navigation label (remember them?) and is not available on the Q/T and for that matter neither is “Late” (see below) Here’s some info on both albums: Musique D’Afrique Nouvelle Orleans and Late

This one is more straight ahead and just as good, note that reviewer gets it about half right:

My favourite Brown-Roach ensemble was the one that included Sonny Rollins. Here they are under Sonny’s name:

My very broad taste in music doesn’t allow me to always read carefully in all threads and follow everything. Surely I can still learn a lot here, but some pearls I already have in my collection. Billie Holiday unfortunately died much too early. So it only remains for me to say: “Baby Won’t You Please Come Home”.

Aretha Franklin the Queen Of Soul moves stylistically between blues, jazz and popular standards. “God Bless the Child” could fit well here and is a blessing for mankind.

Contemporary jazz has international roots, “Momento Magico” and produced a talent in South Korea. Vocal jazz with Youn Sun Nah is funky and infectiously orchestrated.

One of Byron’s best recordings. Thanks for the reminder.

New this week on Tidal and Qobuz, in multiple formats, is this very enjoyable collection that you might otherwise skip over. Lots of fun and well worth a cocktail hour listen. Mix yourself a highball or a martini, put on a smoking jacket and enjoy some groovy Italian jazz.

Jesse Davis had good reviews at the start of his career in the 1990s (when this album was recorded) but after he had to leave New Orleans due to Katrina, his career seemed to never recover. Then his 17 year old daughter was killed by a gang. He has a few albums and a few nice sideman gigs since then but less than one would have expected given his start.

Followed by some Rene Marie.

A bit late to the party, but I just discovered this aptly titled 2h 54min spiritual jazz saga from Kamasi Washington. I haven’t managed to do the whole thing in one sitting yet, but it’s great to dip in and out of, or even have on in the background (even though I’m officially opposed to background music!). Available on Qobuz (and probably Tidal, but I don’t have it).

In the spring of 1986 Stan Getz teamed up with Kenny Barron as his regular pianist; the two played together on almost every Getz album through this one, the last one Getz produced. Some of the best were recorded at Copenhagen’s Montmartre club including this one from March 1991. (Anniversary and Serenity were recorded there, too, with a quartet that included Rufus Reid and Victor Lewis). I think the post-bossa nova recordings are Getz’ best.

A note: It is amazing what information one can find from Tom Lord’s jazz discography. I used it to find that Getz recorded no fewer than 8 albums at Montmartre.
