Some great playing here, it’s a lot of fun!
Spent the afternoon listening to new purchases (based on recommendations from June Jazzwise)
Fantastic ensemble. Atomised was the first track I played on Roon when I set it up.
Can’t remember who recommended this and it may have been in another thread. But very good and on my second listen this morning. Thanks to whomever it was.
That was me - glad you like it, it is indeed excellent - and fantastic SQ.
I’m playing “Heard it on the grapevine” and “Affirmation” again for the 4th time. The SQ is amazing. I love George Benson’s version and this is great as well.
Going to be moving up my playlists, this album.
Keep ‘em coming thank you.
Enjoyed this album, these guys have some great fusion roots and it shows!
Found them on Bandcamp.
This release is also available on both streaming services.
They should be a Black Metal Jazz fusion band with a name like that
Right, it’s a pretty cool name. Sounds like a black metal bands name to me
Coltrane as a side man to Rollins, Davis, Monk, Red Garland, et.al.
‘50s jazz was an incestious affair.
Latest David Murray album with a new group he calls Brave New World Trio. Hamid Drake is on drums and shows once again why he is in such demand and has such critical acclaim. Brad Jones is the excellent bassist.
" On his milestone tenth studio album, In the Spirit of Ntu, the visionary South African pianist, composer, improviser, and healer Nduduzo Makhathini condenses the thematic, sonic, and conceptual notions explored over his catalog into a layered yet accessible 10-track album. In addition to Makhathini’s influences such as John Coltrane, Bheki Mseleku, McCoy Tyner and Abdullah Ibrahim,* In The Spirit of Ntu pulls his most foundational cultural Influences into a space where the sounds of the South African landscape are placed at the center of the nation’s evolving jazz songbook. In the Spirit of Ntu is Makhathini’s second album to be released on Blue Note Records in partnership with Universal Music Group Africa, and the very first release on the newly formed imprint Blue Note Africa*." ~Blue Note
So glad that you posted this great new album. Best David Murray recording in quite some time. A wonderful return to form. Oh and you are totally correct about the great Hamid Drake and Brad Jones. The recording is right up in one’s face and really highlights the bass and drums. Made to be played with a massive subwoofer.
Now it’s my turn. Going deep into the weeds for this one. By the way there are some Buck Hill recordings available on Tidal and Qobuz but not this one. If you are unfamiliar with the late, great Buck Hill, please give him a listen. You will not be disappointed.
