I believe this is the first solo improvised recorded in studio release by Jarrett (solo concerts and solo performance of standards had been done before). No idea why allmusic regards this as “Pop”.

Professor Tyshawn Sorey skinny’s down his large ensemble to a trio with bassist Matt Brewer and pianist Aaron Diego for Mesmerism, a set of fine modern jazz. Sorey selected six jazz standards and empowered his team to stretch out, without totally disrupting the original themes. The music is suitable as a rich background or compelling enough for a deep listening. “Detour Ahead”, “Enchantment ”, “REM Blues” and “Autumn Leaves” are enticing selections.
[O’s Place Jazz Magazine]

"Making a jazz piano trio album like Mesmerism is something Sorey’s admirers might not have expected, but his intent was not to throw curveballs for the sake of doing so. The goal, he explains, was “not to reinvent the wheel or prove anything, but to document the unwavering love and appreciation I have for these songs in the most honest, earnest way I can. I have always welcomed the opportunity to play this music, and, after having been typecast as being a so-called ‘avant-gardist’ for nearly two decades, I decided that it was finally time for me to make this recording date happen myself with musicians I deeply respect and admire.

Is Eric Morcambe on the piano? :grinning:

@jb76 Thanks for that Tyshawn Sorey recommendation. A very nice album.
Enjoying one of my favorite albums from one of my favorite jazz groups along with John Scofield on guitar. Of course in full and glorious analog!
I forgot to mention that the review on Allmusic gets it all wrong. The entire album is great and Scofield more than holds his own and works well with quartet. But the good news is that it’s available on Qobuz, in digital of course, so you can decide for yourself.

Except for Ida Lupino the Bley compositions here are probably among her lesser known works. It is good to hear them again, especially by players as sympathetic to her work as these three.

I have all her stuff from ripped CDs.

Her playing style and compositions will never be confused for someone else, but I think her releases are uneven, creatively.

" Drummer Gard Nilssen’s ECM leader debut follows acclaimed recordings for the label with the Maciej Obara Quartet. Elastic Wave presents Nilssen’s powerful trio with fellow Norwegian André Roligheten on reeds and Swedish bassist Petter Eldh (recently heard with Kit Downes). The group’s dynamic interaction, dancing sense of pulse and boldly etched themes – all three players contribute compositions – make Acoustic Unity one of the most engaging bands on the circuit today, able to address fiery anthems and poignant ballads with equal panache and conviction. Elastic Wave was recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the South of France in June 2021." [ECM]

The Miles Davis store tells me this ground-breaking album was released on July 18, 1960, making it 62 years old, but as listenable as ever. (Other sources says July 15, but ???.)

The album below was also released 62 years ago and yet much of the jazz world still considers it to be too hot to handle, as are all of the many Cecil Taylor albums of the same age. There are also many Miles Davis albums from the late 1960s and 1970s (what is referred to as “Electric Miles”) that are treated with the same disdain as most free jazz recordings.
The most close minded jazz listeners usually work for so called jazz radio stations. For example Dick Golden of Real Jazz on Sirius XM is a perfect example. Absolutely horrible. Jazz for and by dead people.
