Hi. I’m trying to install ROCK on a NUC 7i7BNF. The SSD already has a Windows 10 OS. Will the ROCK install give me the option to wipe the SSD? Or do I need a brand new BLANK SSD. So far, when I try to install, no matter what key I press the NUC wants to load WIndows. I cannot get the option for booting to the USB that has the ROON install. Any ideas?
@anon15113244 is correct.
In actual fact the ROCK installer does not give you the option not to wipe the SSD.
If the SSD had Windows 10 on it, then there’s a chance that the NUC’s BIOS has “Secure Boot” enabled. You will need to go into the BIOS and disable this for RoonOS to run.
I would get a new SSD, that way you can revert back to Windows if you need to. BTW, running Windows as the OS for RoonServer works just fine too.
AFAIK, you don’t need a new SSD, you could just reinstall Windows - Microsoft keeps a record of the motherboard hardware associated with the licence in the cloud.
Hi All and thanks for the insight. I finally got rock installed. The biggest issues seems to be that the front panel USB drive either doesn’t work or isn’t recognized as bootable. However, when I used one of the rear ports it recognized the drive in the Aptio bios. Thanks again.
I was running Roon Core on a 2013 imac with spinning disk. The move to NUC with SSD is quite dramatic, especially searching and accessing music. I haven’t analyzed sound quality yet.
I have a spare M.2 SSD lurking with Windows 10 on it from a Sony tablet that I binned when the screen broke, It’s my BU plan to go in the NUC should Roon flounder
I will check out the @Geoff_Coupe Microsoft License comment one day
That won’t work, because the license is tied to your Sony tablet… Sorry.
I believe it may work. Although the Windows license on the SSD out of the Sony Tablet is tied to that tablet, the NUC may also have a Windows license associated with it which can be activated after the SSD is installed and Windows is booted.
It depends upon whether the original Windows installation on the NUC was an OEM license tied to the NUC or a retail license tied to a Microsoft user account. With the former, it should work. With the latter it will not work.
I have had it for years , never thought about it until just now.
It’s a SONY OEM license, came installed on the tablet, I am not even sure if its W8 updated to W10. I dropped the tablet and smashed the screen it just seemed worth keeping, guilt at dropping the tablet no doubt !!
For the price of a 256 M.2 SSD its not worth worrying ,
I have a local supplier who could install W11 onto the current NUC SSD and lose ROCK , or if I wanted to keep the ROCK- M.2 SSD , and install W11 onto a new 512 (or 256 if I could find one) , or a reformatted 128 that I have.
The 128 is a dead duck anyway , already a dead loss so …
It’s only my way of repurposing the NUC should Roon fail , so not really on my radar.
As long as you have the original license key, you can download the Windows install from Mr. Softee. However, I went to the NUC/ROCK to get rid of a full OS competing for resources with ROON. So far it’s working flawlessly.
