Nucleus: Is there a Backup app installed?

Is there a Backup app installed?

Don’t want to loose everything when it crashes…

Note that the Roon Backup is for the Roon database only - it does not cover any locally stored albums and their track files. If you have these, you should back them up using a third-party backup application.

Such as Carbon Copy Cloner on macOS.

Exactly that was my concern my own music stored on the local drive. Is there a backup script / application installed on the Nucleus? Is it easy to install one myself?

Asking these questions wether I should buy the Nucleus or a Mac mini M4…

No, any file backup solution must reside on a general purpose computer (typically this would be Mac or Windows machines but could be NAS).

I think it’s best to have the Master copy of the files on such a device and then to sync those over to the Nucleus’ storage.

Also ripping CD first and checking / editing metadata first and the only once the disc / disc set is complete copy them over to the Nucleus.

Taken this approach provides a degree of protection from drive failure and improves the ingestion of files sets into Roon as they are transferred promptly without delay between tracks of ripping directly to the Nucleus.

My Synology NAS makes a backup of the Nucleus every night using the “Active Backup for Business” app. That’s a free Synology app from their App Store.

Thanks for the reply.

I will go with the Mac Mini approach. Store the data locally with daily backup to an external drive using SuperDuper or Time Machine.
Since I have ample of space on iCloud I might store a copy in the cloud as well.

Since I am building a new home network with Ubiquity and everything will be 2.5Gbe or faster I will add the 10GB ethernet option to the Mini.

I have one of these plugged into the back of my Nucleus. Is it backing up my local files?

Hi @NipperDog,

That’s just an external USB SSD, by itself it does nothing … it’s just a storage option.

To be able to comment further more information is required…

  • Where are your “local [audio] files”?
  • Where do you want your music files to be stored?
  • Where do you want your music files to be backed up to?

Also for completeness…

  • Where are Roon database backups be store to?

Use both Super Duper (or CCC) and Time Machine.
Also enable the automatic library backups(s) in Roon.

What Ubi router will you get?
