My first gen Nucleus is still happily chugging away after about 6 years (knock on wood). Before I upgrade it, I’m looking to get a N1 for second house system. Looking for input on pros/cons on the following 3 options for where to store music files and Nucleus backups:
NAS (hoping to avoid the cost and effort to maintain for a second house)
Add second internal SSD to the N1 (seems like a simple, streamlined approach?)
Use USB SSD attached to the N1 (may currently be limitations in storage capacity)
I’m leaning towards adding an internal SSD to the N1 (Samsung 990 Pro SSD4TB with heatsink). My current QNAP NAS has hit a plateau of about 1.5TB out of 2.7TB (57%) as most of the growth in my library now comes from Tidal streaming. My Roon database looks to be about 24GB and my library has about 43,000 tracks/3000 albums.
Note that you can’t store a backup on the internal secondary SSD, it’s for music only. (Nor would it make a lot of sense to store a backup internally on a device that may be broken by the time you need the backup). You’d need to attach a USB drive for that, or back up over the network to a different machine.
Internal or external has pros and cons each, in the end it’s a matter of taste, IMHO. There are lots and lots of previous discussions about this.
I am using an external USB drive and storing a backup on it and also in another location on my Desktop PC.
I have a SanDisk 4TB Desk Drive SSD connected directly to the Nucleus One via USB.
My library of 2573 albums and 32300 tracks is backed up on 3 other hard drives, 1 SSD and 2 HDD’s.
