Describe the issue

A few years ago an Early Access update stopped my Nucleus+ from seeing my internal Samsung 4tb SSD . I had to start from scratch adding my music to the drive in a caddy attached directly to Nucleus+. I have just updated to the latest Early Access and after Roon restarted I had no music at all and it could not see the attached drive which , it appears , is no longer readable by other pcs . V.disappointed.

Hi @Moonloop,
Thanks for writing in to let us know about this issue. As a first troubleshooting step can you share a screenshot of your storage settings?

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for getting back. The first part of the image below is the original message after the update with no sign of the original drive . The New Volume drive mentioned below that is where I have started re-populating a replacement external WD 5tb drive . The original had 66k tracks so I have a long way to go yet.

I have not been able to read the original SSD or get any of the music off it unfortunately.

Regards

M

Hi @Moonloop,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your report!

I see that while your Nucleus is on earlyaccess, all your other Roon remote devices are running the latest production build, which is known to cause odd issues. Could you please either move your Nucleus over to production, or move your remotes over to early access, and confirm you’re still having issues?

Thank you!

Hi
I have reverted Roon and remotes to Production Level

The original drive is also attached but not appearing in the list . Add Folder doesn’t see it as an option or on the network . Only the newer 'Baby Backup ’ drive is available .

Hi @Moonloop,

To confirm, your ROONSTORAGE drive only contains your music files, correct? Nothing else, it’s not a drive you use for backups as well, correct?

From a fresh diagnostic scan, I’m not seeing any obvious errors in relation to the health of the drive, or of any corruption in relation to the drive.

Do you have any available backups that predate your issue? I’d be curious to see if that allows you proper access to the drive. Be sure to create a fresh backup before attempting a restore, just in case.

Hi , ROONSTORAGE only ever had Music on it . It is still attached but not seen by Nucleus+ . Newer external drive is Music Library 2019 as here trying to rebuild collection :

I had already tried restoring a backup but it did not work as it refused to recognise the old drive.

M

What format does the ROONSTORAGE drive have? NFTS, exFAT, or something else?

Pretty sure it was exFat but I can’t see the drive anymore since the update to be sure.

Hi @Moonloop,

A few additional questions/troubleshooting steps for you:

  1. What RoonOS version are you running? Could share a screenshot of your webUI?
  2. Can you test out renaming your drive something other than ROONSTORAGE? It could be clashing with the existing Roonstorage folder /
  3. If possible, are you able to plug the SSD into another device to confirm the health and functionality of the drive?

We’ll be on standby for your reply :+1:

2.Even If I could change the name , Nucleus + wouldn’t recognise it anyway.
3. Dead as a dodo , won’t work on 2 other Windows machines
M

So if the drive cannot be accessed by 2 other Windows PCs when attached to them, it would seem to confirm that the problem lies with the drive (or the caddy)? Is it still under guarantee so that you can RMA it?

Warranty is gone on everything unfortunately , Nucleus+ , caddy (which still works ) and drive (which doesn’t ) .All worked perfectly well until the update so I guess I’m screwed .As a system , I expected longer life out it .

Drives fail - it’s a fact of life. And that’s why backups need to be made of their content. Do you have one?

The last time there was a problem with an update , Nucleus+ lost the ability to recognise internal drives ( hence the caddy approach) , now , another update and it’s the drives fault :exploding_head:
I really miss my Squeezebox :sunglasses:

Well, correlation is not causation.

You have established that the external drive has failed, and you have posted a screenshot of your Nucleus’s Web Administration Interface page, which, as far as I can see, indicates that the Nucleus is running correctly.

You seem to have had a run of very bad luck, but I don’t think that the issues have anything to do with Roon updates; otherwise the forum would be flooded with similar complaints.

The fact that Roon never accept any responsibility for any mishaps is something that is trotted out regularly based on half/whole truths . I suggest a forum search for 'problems after updates ’ and you will see that , while not a flood , I am certainly not alone with these complaints.
Anyway , enough said . I am enjoying playing discs again and streaming to my more reliable players , so lesson learned !

That is your opinion - it is not a fact, nor true, as a forum search will show.

Let’s agree to differ then . Forum searches , like statistics, can always be interpreted in different ways
