As I have discussed elsewhere on these forums, I’ve spent years (maybe decades?) applying appropriate release dates to all of my ~52,000 tracks (most pertinent to hundreds of compilations I have) so that I can do magic with those dates creating playlists that are year-related.
This all started before “Original Release Date” was a widely-used tag in tag editing software. If I were starting all over again, I would use this field as well as Release Date (which still sees more widespread support across the music software I use), populating with the same metadata, because I am more OCD about that than I am about a particular re-release of an album I happen to have.
Given the above, and confusion that sometimes stems from Roon’s prominent use of Original Release Date, I suggest a feature that more or less works as follows:
- A setting that allows “Original Release Date” to be inferred/informed by “Release Date” for a given album.
I realize that I could achieve the same by using a script to automatically re-tag all 52,000 of my files, but rewriting 2.3 TB’s worth of music for that purpose seems at odds with Roon’s essential purpose.
I accept that this feature would have the same “deficiencies” as the “Release Date” tags for a given album (in that, in compilations where tracks have different Release Dates, Roon would use the date of first imported file), but that would be completely acceptable to me, and VASTLY preferred to things like this:
