I just learned R2R DACs are natively PCM (right?) so what about upsampling to PCM? does it do something, what shaper should I use with my Ares II for starters? any other comments/knowledge you can share?
how does it affect upsampling to multiples of 44.1 and 48? I saw sinc-s and sinc-m seams to respect these multiples.
After reading all about PCM upsampling in this and other threads I think I found a nice spot, looks like the Denafrips Ares II likes what I am feeding it with:
While it is correct that R/2R architecture is intrinsically PCM there are DACs which use separate boards for DSD and do not convert to PCM (unless set that way). Examples are the Holo Audio Spring/May and the T+A DACs.
This thread sets out Jussi’s recommendations for bit depth with R/2R DACs:
I like the LNS15 Dither for upsampling PCM but try them out on your system and see what suits you.
