When I’m using vpn (fritzbox) my IPhone works well as remote control but Roon doesn’t sees the IPhone as end point.
iOS and Android don’t support a bridge VPN. What you are seeing is to be expected.
Why is the remote control working fine over vpn? I have also streamed from my dreambox (enigma) to my Iphone over vpn, that also works.
Remote control doesn’t use broadcast discovery from the server side. Player endpoint discovery is initiated by the server and cannot traverse different network segments. Regular VPN creates a separate network segment, bridge based VPN network doesn’t.

I am wondering if an openvpn server in tap mode on Netgear’s Orbi would be able to get it working.

Okay, okay I start to understand. If a client can handle openvpn tap, it must be possible to work. Ios does not support this so with Iphone it will not work.
You have been able to connect 2 pcs togther via network or serial for year and they work
