Hi out there,
I started this thread as a Pre Release Discussion on using XenCelans Quick Keys for Roon.
Currently I’m working on my implementation as part of rooExtend. I will call it rooMax. In the video I linked below you can see which functions are currently implemented. Please feel free to ask whatever your initerested in. I also will be happy for some further input that may be included in the final rooMax product.
Right now I have to stop developing for two weeks or so as me and my business moves back to Franconia (part of Bavaria). I hope that after two weeks all things will have settled down a bit to enable me continuing work on rooMax.
In-between I will be here in the thread to answer your questions and gather your ideas.
This looks super-cool to me! What is the connectivity, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?
I can imagine using one control set for me and another one for my wife. Kind of like a hardware profile manager with different playlists, radio stations etc for the two of us. Maybe a third layer for common transport controls.
Can the font be changed, it looks a bit “basic”?
I would definitely consider buying this when ready, I’ve been looking for something similar for a while.
It connects with its own USB dongle. It has a wide range. I tested 10m without any issues. And the battery lasts loooong
You can setup as many button layers as you like. Six Buttons can be configured, volume and time are fixed. Also the orientation of the device can be set in the settings dialog.
Label Text ist limited to eight alphanumerical characters. The device don‘t offer graphic to be displayed.
Can’t wait for this extension! My device just arrived, and it certainly feels like a high-quality piece of hardware to me. Based on this and your video, I will be purchasing a license on day one.
I’m really excited about this one! I just received my Quick Keys. @DrCWO I’m curious, how will dongle connectivity work with rooMax? Will the dongle connect to the raspberry pi or will it need to connect to the Roon server host?
My unit is ordered too…should arrive late next week. @DrCWO I assume the dongle can plug into any rooextend pi port and won’t mess with other remotes like roodial or roonuimo? Range is within room too ok I hope.
Yes, just plug the dongle in a free USB port. It can coexist with all other controllers like SpaceMouse, Nuimo or Surface Dial.
Range is wide for Quick Keys, 10m in a room.
Can I extend the range of the Quick Keys remote if I get a ZEXMTE USB Bluetooth antenna? I have successfully got the rooExtend and rooMax operational via my Raspberry Pi4, a hard wired ethernet connection (CAT 6A cable) to my network, and the included USB dongle that came with the Quick Keys remote. I just want to extend the Xencelabs Quick Keys remote’s reach further on my property. What are your thoughts? Might I just remove the USB dongle that came with the Quick Keys remote and somehow pair/re-pair it with the more powerful version, ZEXMTE USB Bluetooth antenna? Any insights are appreciated. LOVE the rooExtends - OS / rooMax - Application…Outstanding!
I think (but don’t quote me) the xencelabs remote only pairs with its supplied dongle and while the range is pretty good in my house I guess it’s still has it’s limitations.
10-4… You are spot on with the fact that the included dongle works good out of the box! I was hoping for the possibility of extending the range. If anyone has information related to expanding the BT range of the Xencelabs Quick Keys please share! (I have 2 zones that are out of range of the main setup…) Maybe another setup [RPi / Quick Keys Remote] in the middle of the 2 distant zones? That would be obviously more $. Thanks for the response.
This probably won’t give you the distance you’re looking for, but I have my device/dongle in a BDI cabinet, and using a USB extension cable from the rooExtend-Box helped me get much more range.
I have an issue, I came home today to no rooExtend visible on my network or to Roon… No access to configuration page at : http://rooextend.local. !!! I try to reboot by powering off then back on…NOTHING… Am I going to have to reinstall/ reflash the image and start from scratch…??? What happens with info Roon already has?
Follow-up: I deleted these as they did not sync with the new card I flashed and re-booted. Now they are deleted… they must have had my lifetime license key in them because now when I re-enter my lifetime license key… it comes back as INVALID… I guess I’m out $75 now because I have no way to deactivate it from the previous install… This is just crazy… No way to protect yourself early on if something goes wrong…
Have you ever had this happen? I literally JUST got this app and remote yesterday and EVERYTHING was working last night. Then when I get home … NOTHING…
Hello! I have the Raspberry Pi 4 and an ethernet cable / hardwired connection. My RPi is 5 feet from my network switch and router. I also have the rooMax lifetime with the Xencelabs quick Keys remote.Roon lifetime subscription.
If I flash another microSD card and switch it with the current one, will that cause any issues? Will my lifetime rooMax license still be valid if I start from scratch with the new flashed microSD card? I no wonder what will happen with the information that Roon already has received from the current card?
