You’re not crazy; I hear this, too. Don’t ask me why, but Roon has “a sound,” just like other music players have a certain sound. However, Roon’s performance tends to vary according to the release/build. Sometimes, it is fatter and more compressed; other times, it is more incisive and expressive. The current release 1392 is actually sonically quite good again. I far prefer browsing Qobuz and Tidal in Roon over using the native apps, but soundwise, it’s not the same. I know the opinions vary wildly, arguments will be offered for why differences are “impossible”, and some will believe I’ve lost the plot. Never mind… just use your ears.

Apologies, I should have made that clear: when saying build 1392 is quite good again, I was referring to the SQ. Now edited my response, which was only intended to provide some perspective for the starter of this thread.
Oh well, good or bad is subjective, I guess. My point was to indicate that the sound wavers. Ultimately, it’s up to the individual to interpret it.

@Christiaan is just stating that he feels that 1392 sounds better to him; it’s subjective and I respect his opinion without digging into the reasons “why”. BTW, I agree with him, I find that 1392 sounds better than the immediate prior build.

Yes, and the first post of this thread was posted after the 1392 release, so I suppose the first poster disagrees.

This is all just hand waving without any facts and as such not actionable by Roon in any way.

To me, build 1392 sounds less blurred, has tighter transient behavior, and is dynamically more expressive. For me, and in my system, that is better than the preceding few builds. Of course, YMMV.

well, get prepared for the veil to be fully lifted. 1401 is waaay better sounding

It is like not just a veil, but a whole level of openness has been unleashed. The only analogy I can think of is listening to music coming through the closed door or window at a recital and then having the doors open and stepping through in to the performance space; wow!

Unfortunately for me, Roon build 1401, currently, is definitely sounding worse than build 1392 
My Hifiman Ananda Nano headphones failed yesterday (no sound on right) so I have had to resort to an old pair of AKG K92 headphones belonging to my daughter - which are not good 
To be fair though, I don’t think that the difference can be attributed to Roon

Got my replacement Hifiman Ananda Nano headphones today - excellent response to my issue from Hifonix in Sutton Coldfield in the UK.
I can now say without doubt, that Roon build 1401 sounds so much … like build 1392 did 5 days ago 
All the detail that I missed with the AKG K92’s is back.

Isn’t that what this hobby is all about?
I also like food and beverages that tastes good to me, and will go out of my way and spend more money to enjoy them. Are you someone who goes on foodie websites and tell them it all tastes the same because they can’t prove it doesn’t due to an absence of facts?

There’s a big difference between there being a real difference and a completely uncontrolled, non-blind perception of “differences.”
You can tell one kind of oyster form another just by taste, without looking at them. You will not hear any sound difference between Roon builds if you do not know which build is playing. So while the perceived difference might seem as real to you as anything perceived can be, it is not a particularly useful topic of discussion because it in no way depends on anything in Roon.
