Raspberry PI and Active Speakers

Update: I have successfully copied the HiFiBerry o/s to an 8Gb SanDisk MicroSD card, but the RP 2 does not support onboard Wi-Fi. I will either (hopefully) locate a USB Wi-Fi dongle in my stuff and try it out, or longer term I may just get a RP 4 (as it’s newer) and start afresh. I will come back here to update everyone. Thanks for all the suggestions so far

I can recommend that setup using a 2 channel amplifier as HAT module from Hifiberry. It works flawless and together with the optional DSP Module it is bargain. Quality is very good, great stability. I recommend Dietpi based installation of Roonbridge software.

Out of curiosity why the amplifier if I have Active Loudspeakers? Or are you just referring to what you have?

I am looking at using the Hi-Fi Berry O/S as I’m sure I’ve used it before.

Yes you’re right my fault. In that case, just use the RCA or XLR version of their DAC cards. The rest is plain installation. And yes HifiBerry OS is nice but quite outdated when it comes to drivers for extra Wifi cards. But if you’re using Ethernet connections there won’t be any issue. I’m using Hifiberry inside a pair of Bang Olufsen CX100.

@SMANGELS No problem, I was just curious. I’ll look into a few options. I am interested in upgrading my Raspberry Pi to a newer model. I have a 2 Model B so I’d have to use a dongle for WiFi. Plus it’s an older model now. Hopefully HiFiBerry will work with it. I know they are in the process of updating the OS

There is a standard fully metal case that does the job. Supplied by hifiberry. Tailor made for their dacs with digital or cinch or xlr connectors, so perfect for whatever your active boxes need. Costs about 30€ if I remember correctly. Hifi berry website, „cases“

@Mike_Duffin that’s what I’ll be using. Trying to get hold of a 1GB Pi 4. Pi Hut list them but are O/O/S currently. As soon as I find my USB WiFi dongle I can test the Pi 2 out. The location the speakers are in doesn’t have a wired connection available.

Careful you did not previously mention „WiFi“ in your question, only „active“.

Active loudspeakers work with built in amps and a wired connection per cinch/xlr/digital between raspberry pi and active box.

A WiFi active box is a different animal. Personally I have no background in WiFi transportation of audio signal and cannot advise further. Suggest you rephrase your question and resubmit here. Someone will know I am sure.

@Mike_Duffin The Speakers are active, they are Edifer R1280DB’s. The WiFi was regarding the Raspberry Pi.

Then I misunderstood. That will work fine I am sure

I would vote for version 4B that is much colder and doesn’t need a heatsink. It runs stable at my place since more than 4 years back.

@SMANGELS thanks I am very very tempted to go with a 4B, I just wanted to test the HAT still works before committing to purchasing one and the associated accessories (case etc)

Ironically I remembered I DO have an RP4B from a different project, only issue is… the RP4B uses a Micro HDMI connector, not a Mini/Full size, and I don’t have a Micro HDMI, and the RP4 does NOT fit into the RP2 HiFiBerry plastic case. I have now ordered a Micro HDMI-HDMI cable and a new HiFiBerry Steel case from Pi Hut (UK) :crossed_fingers:

EDIT: Installed the HiFiBerry OS using the Raspberry Pi Connect service, having a few issues setting it up. Off to sleep now I’ll resume this tomorrow evening!

I am back! Apologies for the delay in responding had a busy week. Update: I have tried HiFiBerry OS’ both the existing and new 64bit versions but neither would output any sound, I have contacted HiFiBerry via their support page and they believe it’s a bug. In the meantime I downloaded Ropieee but I’m not able to ‘see’ the RP4 on the Roon app as a device to play to. I can and will upload a screenshot later. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Just wanted to post and say… it’s working! I have set the RP4 up with Ropieee and after a few teething issues I have got it working. I have a question about Ropieee but I will post on the official thread about it
