Can you do an experiment?
Make sure you change a setting (take one that is not that important, like the Airplay Service Name), save it, run configure and reboot.
And then report back if there’s still no sound while using Airplay.
Done, but unfortunately still no sound.

And you ran a configure after you made a change, right?
Yes. I just reverted the change, ran reconfigure again and rebooted. AirPlay still does not give any sound while Roon is playing fine.
Another observation: My active speakers have auto standby. When starting a stream via AirPlay they turn on, but no sound.
Made a quick test, Airplay from my iphone13 to a Pi4 with Digione, DAC displays an incoming 44.1kHz SPDIF COAX signal but no sound…

As I don’t own Apple devices, I’m normally testing Airplay via Roon.
Can someone test that? So not streaming from your phone, but directly from Roon.
Did that. No Airplay. From iPad…I go to Airplay Devices and choose Ropieee. The video plays but no sound. Last week this worked. No HAT…USB out to DAC
I added one Pi to Roon via Airplay. I can confirm that I get sound.
Streaming from my iPhone after that results in silence once again.
Could this be an issue with Airplay 2 only? I don‘t know the build process but there have been some changes to shairport-sync and nqtp.

Yes… but this was already present in 2023.04.

AirPlay works well for me via usb on a rpi4 and a Stack Audio Link2 (based on cm3) with Roon, but not via my IPad
