Hi – the title says is all. What I would like to do is select a group of albums, or ALL albums really, and get rid of ALL the genres. I don’t work with genres at all, but rely heavily on tags and since (for some reason) they appear in the same space under the PLAY button in album view, all the genres do for me is clutter the space where I have my tags, which is the information I want to see.
I know that I can batch edit album genres, but only one genre at a time. That is, I would have to pick every genre I want to get rid of individually, which would take forever.
You can build up a list of genres to be removed from multiple albums in one operation. That’s the best that can be done. There’s no “nuke every genre” from my albums in one fell swoop AFAIK…
Thanks, yes, but that would take forever, unfortunately. Alternatively, under options, there could be a toggle “show genres“. This could be on by default, but I could just untoggle it and be done with the genres. Maybe this could be implemented?
One thing I never understood is why tags/genres are differentiated by capitalised case/upper case and two almost identical shades of grey. Depending on remote it can be almost impossible to tell the difference. I cannot remember now which roon version but before the last major GUI refresh the buttons were contrasting colors and easy to distinguish.
Tags have blue background on Dark mode, in light mode it’s a purple grey colour but likely hard to distinguish in some conditions. It shifted in 1.8 I believe.
I remember now, it was 1.8. In light mode, Classical has an offwhite/grey background, not white, so depending on what you are listening to the buttons can be different shades of grey on a different shade of grey background. I cannot say I ever got used to it.
Yes, it almost did (once the changes got applied to the entire library) - no genres visible for 99% of the library. There are a few local albums left showing genres, but these can be chased down via the Album browser and Focus, e.g. for Classical, I’ve still got 4 local albums showing:
This is fantastic! It took all night for the library to reload and, as @Geoff_Coupe says, almost all genres are no longer displayed. This is exactly what I wanted. Thank you so very much for taking the time to try it out. Very much appreciated!!
I don’t know if it was deliberate, but your choice of example was absolutely perfect. Here we are, talking about tags and genres that look the same in a music archive, and the example album is “You All Look the Same to Me” by ARCHIVE.
Late reply but this is exactly what I have in Roon for years - both the options disabled.
Still using the Roon’s default genre database but am simply mapping genres to artists manually. The only way to make them reliable for me.
Btw, for simplicity reasons, I dont use genres on albums at all. Only on artist level.
Simple to maintain and works wonders. No need for “mood” tags or other workarounds to describe sonic characteristics.
P.S.: Artists and albums not in your library will still have default genres assigned. Only once you add them to your library will the default genres disappear so that you can assign on your own.
