When I view “My Albums” (under My Library) I see albums listed that I don’t have in their entirety. In other words, if I have a single song in a random playlist somewhere, then I will see the album for that one song displayed. This is not behavior I would expect. Is there a filter that I am missing that can remove albums from being displayed that I don’t actually have in my collection in their entirety?
I did not expect this and I am album-oriented. When I had a physical collection, I would separate out my singles into their own section. I did not like them mixed. I’m sure other people did mix them in and that’s fine too. My point is that being album-based does not necessarily prescribe this behavior. Does anyone know whether this design has been user tested? Do most users expect this behavior or are they surprised by it?
Singles ARE separated into their own section under the Artist Overview (which is what is in your libaray) and Discography.
Singles are not tracks which you just add from an album, singles are what has actually been released as a single by the record company, and are added as that product. This included EPs, etc.
I added the “Pennies From Heaven” SINGLE by Rod Stewart, and then I added just the track from the album Swing Fever. Note the difference.
Then under the Album view you go to Focus and select only “Main Releases” or full albums and the singles will be filtered out. Save that view as a Bookmark and then done. Just open the bookmark and all you will see are “Mail Releases” aka full albums.
You don’t have to use the “Single” Album Type for this, I just used it as an example. Personally, if I was going to do this I’d put all the Albums with 1 track only added to the library as the ‘Other’ option, thus preserving the purity of Singles to be real Singles.
Once done, you can filter the opposite way as well.
There are some powerful focus filters in the Albums view that will allow you to quickly and pretty accurately tag partial or full albums (whichever you prefer). See this for example, which I use to identify full albums that I’ve never played:
In my collection, I have a number of albums that only have a few (typically non-contiguous) tracks. I mark all other albums with a tag called “Full Albums.”
Once properly tagged, your subsequent options for viewing are much richer.
