Whatever he may have done wrong, he was an incredibly charismatic and capable conductor. I still vividly remember his Wagner Ring Cycle in 1990 at the Met. Just having finished my university degree, I scratched all my pennies to fly over there for a week to listen to it. Unforgetable.
