RIP Loretta Lynn, the coal miner's daughter

I remember seeing the movie back in 1980…

I watched the movie again yesterday, “Coal Miner’s Daughter”, and was impressed at how good it really is. Sissy Spacek plays Lynn, and she won an Oscar for her role. But the first three-quarters are relentlessly entertaining, and Michael Apted, the director, does a great job of depicting the postwar coal-mining life in Appalachia. Highly recommended; Spacek, and Beverly D’Angelo, as Patsy Cline, do all their own singing.

Apted is famous for his Up series of documentaries, but this is probably the best theatrical movie he made.
