ROCK installation - NUC13 should ever sleep?

Hi there,

I just installed ROCK on a Nuc13anhi7, one of the devices approved by Roon, this was to replace what can only be described as a defective Nucleus Plus.

The install was a little tricky, it took two of us, my computer nerd friend and myself. It was not so straightforward and it took his background to see it through. I took us 3 hours, could be an all time slow install. But once up and running the NUC13 was nothing like the Nucleus Plus, I think the later was defective from day one.

Upgrades and it would fail, if I didn’t use if for a week it took a lot to get it back to life. 6 years if fighting with that thing.

I was wondering if anyone out there could tell me if the NUC 13 should ever sleep?

IT stays on 24/7 like the Nucleus (I believe as I never knew what it was doing) But should the NUC 13 sleep and not run all the time?

I don’t want it to burn out. I just thought it would go to sleep as I don’t use it for a month at a time.

Thoughts?
Thanks in advance

It always stays on, just like the Nucleus. Its power consumption when idle is tiny.

If you don’t use it for longer, just turn it off (like the Nucleus). Either with a short press on the power button or by going to http://rock in a web browser and clicking shutdown in the menu

From having the unit ready and burning the usb files, it should take a matter for 15 minutes (if that) to be up and running. So, not sure what your tech friend was doing…… However, I’m glad you’re there now!

As for leaving it on yes. I would leave it 24/7, you can always restart it when it needs it, which shouldn’t be a lot.

We are all here to help should you require it. Happy new year and enjoy the music!!!

This bit is very important. Just suddenly removing the power or a longer press on the button will shutdown immediately and risk corrupting the database.

I can’t account for the length of time it took us, but it took a few hours and in the end it all worked. Some details were less than intuitive.

I have an issue that has come up with ARC. When using my android phone Arc loads and plays but stops playing at the end of tunes and if I use a text or email, it also stops until I open the Arc app and then it instantly starts playing again. but left alone, it stops every time at the end of the tune it’s playing.
Any thoughts?
And a Happy New Year to all.

Maybe some Android battery optimization setting? You could try allowing ARC to run in the background:

Your Arc issue sounds similar to that of mine.

I had playback stopping when opening other apps on Android and appears to be a known issue.

Hi Menzies,
I don’t know if you can see the response from Suedkiez, but he just gave me the answer to that problem. Suedkiez is one fine fellow and I thank him very much for solving this problem, Arc is still running where is would have stopped by now.
Thanks Suedkiez

There are mixed opinions on this , either way works.

I live in Johannesburg where our summer norm is thunderstorms , having lost kit to a lightening strike some years back , I unplug all sensitive equipment when a storm is brewing and at least overnight. In winter I tend to leave on 24/7

I restart each morning in summer as I restart the network for the day…

I have never really noticed any problems with this , I use the short press off on the NUC then disconnect power. I do notice a tendency to sluggishness in winter after a week or so.

There is no harm to either technique, even the “pull the plug” without shutdown has never caused me issues (holds thumbs) when our power supply fails.

There have been mixed messages regarding shutdown, that it kill the or corrupts, for the first time in years I have a device that continually works, I’m afraid to touch it. or look at it as it might stop working again. I’m getting help.

Thanks for reaching out, I may have to get a UPS of some sort, we get a lot of brownouts and power surges and blackouts in the winter here, west coast Canada weather.
Happy New Year

There are 2 ways of powering down

a quick press of the on/off button is an “Orderly” shutdown (same as shutdown on the web admin page) - Recommended.

LONG press of the on/off button is sudden death/power off , not recommended but can be necessary for emergency hang up or the like. This is like pulling the plug out and can lead to database corruption.

That said my NUC has had the power shut off due to supply limitations in my country and I never experienced any ill effects.

A UPS is first prize, then close down with a short press method . This is what I do , I moved my NUC so as to be on the main computer UPS because at one stage we had so many power cuts.

Don’t run on UPS if it has Lead Acid batteries it kills them !! When the power goes shut down the kit and wait.

Thanks for that, my lead acid battery UPS did die connected to the modem, that would explain that maybe. Thanks again
