If you click on my avatar, you can see the details of my MOCK build in my profile.
Internally I have the HDPLEX 400W HiFi DC-ATX which is supplied by their 200W LPS, which has long ago been superseded.
If I was to build this again I would not bother with the LPS, I would just have all the power supply within the HDPLEX and then plug it into the mains.
I would agree with the @Rugby and @Andreas_Philipp1 about running your own HDPLEX on Linux, if you are familiar with it, I don’t have to the knowledge or time to investigate how to set up a Linux server at the moment but if an update ever “bricks” my MOCK then I will have to go down that route.
Fully agree. Have you noticed the new GaN 250W ATX power supply? That would be my choice at this moment, as for its high efficiency it should remain pretty cool…
I hadn’t, looks pretty cool. i really should look into putting all the power inside the case, the LPS is utterly pointless for me, it big, hot and uses a lot of power for little or no gain.
Really?? I had not used Windows for nearly twenty years until six months ago when I needed to upgrade some firmware on a Samsung 980 Pro SSD (Samsung don’t let you update firmware from their Mac software, really, come on Samsung, get with the times!).
So I installed a copy of Windows 10 via boot camp on and old MacBook. It was pretty simple but my goodness, I find Windows utterly confusing after using a Mac for so long.
Good question @Lars_Sander, I think you can buy a NUC kit without the case but not sure anymore.
I bought a NUC10i3 several years ago to use as a backup core.

Completely agreed. This business of using LPS on computers is pure cargo-cult craziness.
Yep, you live and learn.
In my poor defence, part of my reasoning was the hatred of lots of power bricks and I was originally powering an NBN modem and my ASUS Router from the same LPS but I’m over it now.
(If my Dad had been around when I purchased it, he’d have said “There’s one born every minute!” ).
Thank you guys for all the useful suggestions and learnings.
So (for now) it all comes to these options if you want to create and build a new 2023 RoonCore with a chassis that ooshes a kind of a “HiFi Vibe” (imho) and 100% Fanless and silent!
OPTION 1: ROCK with HDPlex (Supported HW)
Chassis:
HDPlex H1 v3 with NUC kit.
PSU:
HDPlex GaN 250W internal (Not verified for option 1)
Mainboard and CPU:
Get/buy a official supported Intel NUC gen.8 or 10 Remove the mainboard and install it in the HDPlex H1 v3 with NUC kit.
RAM:
16 GB (any that is supported)
Storage:
Minimum 128 GB NVMe for the ROCK OS.
1 or 2 TB SSD Disk for storage of your library.
-------±-------
OPTION 2: MOCK with HDPlex (Non-Supported HW)
Chassis:
HDPlex H3 or H5
PSU:
HDPlex GaN 250W internal
Mainboard:
Asus Prime H610i-Plus D4-CSM
CPU:
Core i5-12400
RAM:
16 GB (any supported by mainboard)
Storage:
Minimum 128 GB NVMe for the ROCK OS, Ubuntu with RoonServer
1 or 2 TB SSD Disk for storage of your library.
--------±-------
Hope this summarizes it. Correct me if I’m wrong @Andreas_Philipp1@oneofmany
I am a little unsure about the PSU for option 1…?
Whatever you decide upon, consider asking Larry from HDPlex about your hardware choices. He will resolve your question about the GaN PSU in your option 1… Also, that your processor choice is a good match for the case’s passive cooling system.
