ROCK on Windows ARM Dev Kit

Really no one who tried getting ROCK on this?
I like the design and a big fan of Surface devices…would be great to have this as a ROCK.
32gb Ram…512 GB SSD…

That’s an ARM CPU, ROCK is for Intel. Roon Server is x64 only as well, so installing an ARM distribution of Linux with Roon Server won’t work either

Folks have got Roon to run on some strange devices so it might work.
But then it would be known as Mock and zero official support available.
Buyer beware😉

Strange devices yeah, but entirely different CPU architecture not.

(Side note: It’s a nice box for ARM operating systems though, we run them in the test lab at work, and I have never understood why Microsoft does not sell them normally)

I had not looked at it closely but yes, that’s a non starter.

One could run Windows for ARM on it and then x64 Roon Server in the translation environment, but not sure if that’s worth it

There’s a reasonable chance that would work but it would be sort of silly. You’d be better off with a Mac Mini.

As an aside - I’ve been running the Windows version of ARM in Parallels on Apple Silicon for years. It’s rock solid, and performs really well. Windows has the potential to be great on ARM machines when they become broadly available. The rumor mill says “soon”…

Yeah I’ve switched to a MacBook Air M2 and it’s more fun running Ubuntu ARM on Parallels than dealing with the inferior and more expensive Dell laptops

I’m skipping ARM and will wait for RISC-V build of Roon.

thank you, I’ll see myself out.

Amazing stuff, right? Go full screen and you wouldn’t even know you’re in a VM. I do video conferencing in Windows (mostly Teams) and nobody would guess I’m not on a decent Windows-native machine.

I wondered if @Bram_Mouton could run a core on an Ubuntu ARM VM on that dev kit box. There are Roon ARM bits for Roon Bridge but not for Server, right? I recently moved my core to NUC running Ubuntu but I don’t think @Bram_Mouton has any sort of VM-based option unless I’m missing something.

According to the download site the Roon Server for Linux is x64 only. I’m not aware of a generic translation environment for Intel code to run on Linux ARM distributions. Hence why I suggested the (rather pointless) option of running Windows for ARM, which does have a translation environment

I was trying to run Roon Server on Asahi Linux on a Mac mini M1 using Box64. Until now I did not get it to run. Probably a waste of time. Really curious when the Roon Server for Linux on ARM will be released though… So I can stop tinkering and start listening to Music.

Had anyone success running it via box64?
Are there any news on releasing an arm version of Roon Server?
