Hi,
I was excited to find that Roon can rip CDs by plugging usb CD/DVD drive into the core. I plugged in cd drive and got onto the Roon OS and it recognizes the cd drive but it can’t find storage so I assume I need more on top of what my server currently has? I am a novice with computer gear and bought my Roon rock server already set up. I’m wondering if someone can advise best option for storage. I understand that when ripping, Roon looks for internal drive before external and if that’s the best option and is possible I’d like to add appropriate storage internally. I’d love to know what type of drive to get and how to install. I only have about 250 CDs and also rip some of my rarer vinyl (I know cd ripper won’t manage this…).
My ROCK server currently Contains an Intel NUC with 8th gen. Core i5 (Quad Core) processor with 8GB DDR4 RAM and a 240GB SSD.
Thanks for considering
Simon
I started out with a 1TB Samsung Sata SSD for my small 300 cd library and used dbpoweramp for ripping. I use the NUC ripper for the occasional new addition but in my opinion dbpoweramp is much quicker on a desktop or laptop for ripping sessions then use drag and drop to copy the entire music folder to Roon over the network.
The 1TB size internal SSD drive was fine for 2 years but then I got a MC DAC and started downloading DSD MC and DSD Stereo files. Those large files take up a lot of space. I’ve got a 4TB Samsung 870 EVO to replace the 1TB drive but have not swapped them yet. Never imagined I’d need more than 1TB for my music library.
Wish I had started out with the 4TB drive to avoid the hassle of changing them out later.
Consider a smaller usb attached ssd for the database backups.
Does your NUC have space for an extra drive internally? If you have a NUC model type of the form NUC8i5BNH, then you do, but if it is of the form NUC8i5BNK, then you don’t.
Hi Mike,
Thanks for your feedback and also for your welcome. All very much appreciated. I’ll look into the SSD drives and also at dbpoweramp. Very helpful to know about your experience with storage sizes.
Thanks again,
Simon
Thanks Geoff, my nuc is housed in a fanless Akasa Turing case. The guy I bought it from wasn’t sure but thought that may mean that your question about which version may not apply given the way it is currently housed. Any thoughts on that? Thanks
Simon
Thanks Simon. The Akasa case does have space inside to fit a 2.5" HDD or SSD. I’m not sure how thick the drive can be - in the Intel NUC BNH housing, I think there is a limit of 9mm. This means that HDDs of up to 2TB capacity or SSDs up to 8TB can be fitted internally. Akasa installation document is here:
I have that case and it is perfect for a 2TB drive but not for the thicker 4TB model which of course I wanted to use (but thankfully I had both).
It was quite difficult at the time to see where it fitted in the case, but it’s actually a clever design and fits right into the top using some of the additional bits that were left over.
It’s a very well designed case and I have been 100% happy with my purchase decision.
Thanks for your input Michael. I’ll keep that in mind and if it ok I’ll let you know if I can’t figure it out. I’ve never opened mine up, I’m a novice tinkerer at best with CD players etc, but complete novice with computers. I do love the Akasa case-looks awesome and the setup doesn’t miss a beat
Thanks for your input, Jefferson. What size collection do you have? Just ripped CDs or other files? May I ask what you use to rip CDs inc hardware and software?
All the best
Simon
You can always add an external drive via USB. Always had an external drive and when Rocks ripper actually worked without locking up after one rip it was all fine and will rip to it.
