ROCK - Wireless/password?

Looking over the ROCK install instructions, I don’t see any reference to wireless or joining a network. I intend to run it wired most of the time, and at first, but I may at times need to go wireless. In any case, it’s necessary information for people who will be wireless at the outset: Where and how do you set up wireless, i.e., enter a password to join a wireless network? (I saw this in the instructions but wasn’t sure what to make of it: Setting up ROCK for first r> un

You must visit the web UI listed on the console of the machine, click on the “?” next to “Missing Codecs” and follow the instructions.) Not sure whether that process requires Internet access or not. ?

Thanks.

Wi-Fi must be enabled in BIOS for the option/setup to be visible to ROCK networking.

Thanks - is it enabled by default? I was just reviewing the BIOS update settings, and the other install instructions, and I didn’t see it mentioned.

I believe that Wi-Fi was enabled straight out of the box on my NUC7i5. But I cannot vouch for that, nor for any other NUC model. Just double check the BIOS settings.

I’m slow catching up to the conversation here; this is a NUC I’ve been using for a while. Wireless is definitely enabled. I’m still not clear how to register it on the network, but I guess that will become clear as I proceed. Just trying to not overlook anything important.

Thanks again.

@Jim_Austin – its in the web ui, next to Ethernet.

Thanks again Danny. Just to finish off the discussion of my experiences installing ROCK, which were quite satisfactory over all, I’ll say that for someone who had not been through this before, the last bit was cryptic:

Setting up RO> CK for first run

You must visit the web UI listed on the console of the machine, click on the “?” next to “Missing Codecs” and follow the instructions.

Having been through it now, I think this means that we should go to another computer (or other device–a Remote probably) and visit the web-UI for the ROCK. Before going through it, though, I was trying to figure out how I’d visit a web-UI on a computer that was running ROCK; does it have some sort of browser? Just another spot where you might consider tweaking the documentation.

Overall though, a good experience, thanks in part to a helpful community (including, of course, Roon staff).

I m yet go through the setup! Thanks for the post. I did not know , we have to goto another computer to access “?” But what’s web-UI? And “how to”?

ROCK doesn’t have a GUI, the monitor has no function beyond the very first steps.
First, the ROCK must be on the network, wired at this stage since you haven’t set up wifi yet.
Web-UI: start another computer, start the browser, in the address bar (where you type “google.com”) enter the IP address that ROCK showed. Alternatively, start a Roon remote, click on Managing a Roon OS on the bottom, and it launches the browser. In the Web-UI you can enter the wifi password.
Copying codecs to the ROCK machine: on a Windows machine, start the Windows Explorer and in the address bar enter \ROCK and browse to the codecs directory, then copy the file in there.

That should be “enter \\ROCK” (the forum software has swallowed one of the back-slashes).

Exactly. You (Roon) folks have done a great job with this, including the documentation: always succinct and well written (says this writer and long-time editor). The trick, I’m thinking, is to strike just the right balance for a diverse audience–not too much detail for your usual IT crowd, but enough for those with less experience. Here’s a case where a carefully chosen phrase or two added to the documentation might be a good idea.
