Might seem silly - but what is the role of the remote (iPad / iPhone) after your start your music? Does it hand off all functionality to Roon and act primarily as a playback display?

Yes, indeed. Throw the remote out of the window and the queue will keep on playing.

It’s not at all silly! It’s a fundamental difference between the way roon works vs typical music “players”.

The remote is just control point of the server, everything originates from the server, so there is no hand off.
