6 years? not old IMO. But anyway.
LOL, given the level of support today what do i lose? Every single time i have had support it was driven by Roon breaking something.

Hi @Just_Me, the Roon GUI (Roon client) is part of the Full Roon installation, there is no separate client install for PC and Macs (even if there was separate client Roon 2.0 it would still be built on technology that is dependent on the later OS stacks). So unfortunately for Roon 2.0 the answer is no.
I’m not a MacOS user so can’t comment on those, but just wondering if it’s possible for you to update the PC from Win 7 to Win10?
When I say Roon will no longer support Roon 1.8 Legacy, I’m talking about updates to the software, etc.
Carl - thanks for the clear answer. Not what i wanted to hear, but clear.
As to updating - no on all, since the limitation is other (old, often the company no longer exists) important software that those machines exist to run. The WIN7 is also the least of the issues since its largely useless and often not running. The others however are workhorses.

quick question for all. In the downgrade instructions it emphasizes that i must first have roon 1.8 remote running somewhere. I cant figure out why. With ROCK is this really a requirement? Obviously i need to put 1.8 n later to act as a remote…
Asking since I’m about to pull the trigger
And yet one more. The instructions say click “reinstall” under Operating System. Is this correct? I would assume i only want to re-install Roon, not linux. Pls confirm.
yes, the instructions are correct.
Because when we tested this stuff prior to public release, we found that users that installed the remote first had fewer troubles than those who installed the core first.
OK, thanks. Can i have BOTH 1.8 and 2.0 installed on one of the laptops?
Obviously not running simulteneously.
I note that the old app cannot be distinguished from the 2.0 app in the Dock. Renaming the app works but does not change the dock icon. The old app can be in its own folder in /applications
For the many that likely want to run, not walk, back to v1.8, I have followed the instructions and completed the job. Its worked great and left everything as it was. Mine is a ROCK, so likely the most complex of the variants.
Basically the instructions (with small differences) tell you how to place a pointer file in your “data” directory and then re-install. You need to point to or use the “1.8 legacy” installer. Success.
I am relieved.

Glad it worked out for you eventually.
Jim, appreciate your suggestions but at the moment, the SonicTransporter i5 is not really able to do the Legacy upgrade. Also why go thru all the hassle for a couple of months. Roon is very clear that legacy will only be supported until the end of December. So 1.8 stable it is until it dies. I am of course setting up an alternative. Not as good as Roon 1.8. But at least i can listen to my local music without internet. All the best, Ron
it may become unsupported but it ill run. Yes, if Roon continues on its course many of us will seek alternatives, but i hope they have an epiphany that without customers business is tough.
Fort the record it makes no difference if you (don)grade a client before or after.
I did both.
That’s what I would do. I would keep Roon 2.0 to always get the latest updates and be able to use Roon ARC. Find another alternative for when the internet goes out.
Yes agreed
Hi Jim, Well said. Im going to do the same but will not update to 2.0 until I have my alternative set up and running. Looking at Audirvana Origins and Jriver. There is also iTunes/Music. I will play with all three and then decide the best alternative. All the best, Ron
Dependd very much on the options you determine most useful - for me its multiple zones and device control that I cant quite find in other products. I don’t have that much old hardware and I do like ARC a lot too. I’m also a lifetime user of 5+ years so have my ROI already. I have very stable internet and I can fix most issues without support assistance.
Granted not everyone will have this view but I’m guessing its the minority that is really going to be affected.
I still Roon think could have done this better and had a “crippled” mode for when the internet goes away (or roon even if that ever happens) as their cloud systems have indeed failed in the past too.
I would agree with you that the multiple zones and device control are unique to Roon and one of the things that I love. Those functions are really unique to Roon. With that said, if Roon still supports local libraries and then basing the software solely on continual internet connectivity is not wise. I am a Roon lifetime member also and the software is a big part of my families everyday use. As you suggest they should have or should soon allow a reduced mode so we can listen to our local music “off line”. That would make our lives much easier and those of us that have issues would not be forced to scramble to find an alternative. Have an awesome day!
Ron puts it well, and nicely. But i think he let’s them off way too lightly. My #1 long term concern is the “must have internet”. I hope the market (that’s us and many more) make them rethink that. In the near term the fact that they just made most of my control points, and cores-on-the-road obsolete, so that they could simplify their programming life with the latest version of .NET, is annoying and costly, but ultimately livable. but not being able to play music after a storm takes out internet, when on a plane, when at a mountain cabin, or when there’s a simple glitch (yea, i do have a fiber to my main house) is just bad. And totally needless. I re-iterate this is all about copy protection - which in most software died decades ago.
I even have nothing to gain - i paid up front for a lifetime of use. You know, like a product!
Roon sees ARC’s offline feature as a solution to this, because, well, we all have gobs of unused memory on our phones (or plenty of $$$$ to run out and buy a new phone with more memory) just for this purpose.
