Roon acquired by Harman International [Feedback]

Probably none. There might be some if you’re listening to some hip-hop and are considered a problem demographic:

I’m usually fairly relaxed about these things, maybe too much, but they are certainly not entirely innocent

It would be great, if we can leave the data protection discussion out of here.

Sad news …

I’m fairly certain that lifetime licenses will receive special treatment.

I wouldn’t be surprised if new features were progressively reserved for monthly/annual subscriptions (i.e. Lifetime license still functional but “frozen” in the current version of Roon).

“You have a liftetime license and you want to upgrade to Roon 3.X.X ? Pay for it,or stay with your Roon 2.X.X !”

What you’ve described with your last sentence is precisely what Mediamonkey did many years ago, which led me towards discovering Roon in the first place.

Oops I’ve just played the sex pistols.

I can hear the police with their jack boots kicking my door in.

God job it wasn’t the final cut I was playing.

They couldn’t care less about these things.
And what if they could care. What would they do with the information?
Absolutely nothing.

C’mon. Enough with the boring walled garden that is Roon. Aren’t you looking forward to having Roon endpoints built into your Samsung appliances? Or popup ads finally appearing in your controller window? Gotta monetize this thing!

You’ve nailed it.
This is the real problem.
Data mining doesn’t matter. The problen is extra monetisation. Don’t forget its already monetised as its a pay or don’t get service.
It’s the extra layers that they could pile on that are the real issue.

Refer to what I linked, there was a reason for doing that

Dear @enno , dear @Danny I admire the work you have done for such a long time and as much as I loved your independence it’s clear to understand the rationale behind this move. I hope Harman will keep your vision and motivation.

Of course, there are threats, as life present to the ones who don’t change.

All the best, cheers!

I can’t see the developers behind Sooloos / Roon working for a big company. To me they are free music loveing souls who wants to change and make a better way for us and them to enjoy music. We waited for Sooloos 2.0 and we got Roon 1.0. I guess we never see Roon 3.0 but I am very curious about what they will come up with next time. Please put me on yout mailing list and keep me posted. i’m all in.
Keep up the good work.

It will be interesting if Harman offers a Roon Lite version of the software that does have availability of the big boys like Amazon and Apple into the software but not with the full integration that Roon requires ?

Many software products still offer one-time-purchase options at reasonable cost, but the updates are limited to patches or small improvements within that version release.

Roon was different, because their lifetime membership was offered at a very high upfront cost, but that came with lifetime access to all future upgrades and developments as well.

I hope the new owners will honour that commitment.

They don’t need it, but I guess they have it. The last time I added a lifetime subscription, they had it. Point is, I’m not worried about this issue as some are.

EDIT: I just checked my account and my credit card info is not there. I must have removed it.

Firstly, genuine congratulations to Danny and the Roon team.

And fingers crossed that Roon stays operating as an independent (or at lest arms length) entity for as long as possible under Harman. But unfortunately been around for long enough to see how these kinds of acquisitions all too often pan out eventually.

Heck someone even built a Tumblr to collect these kinds of “It’s been an incredible journey, nothing will change” posts, along with follow up tweets 6 months later to say that the core team and tech has been rolled into the mothership.

They are looking to prep Roon for greater scale. They said Roon would remain a stand-alone business unit. A re-org certainly means different reporting structures and goals. I suspect current leadership will remain for at least 2-years and possibly well into the future. The software engineers will be key to keep as well. I suspect and hope that employee benefits will be good for Roon folks to ensure stability and transition. Speculate all we want, I hope that in the end, this will be good for users. Long may they support the lifetime accounts without compromise to future enhancements.

I have yet to see a huge conglomerate from Logitech buying Slim Devices to Apple securing numerous entities benefitting customers in the long run.
