Roon acquired by Harman International [Feedback]

Roons been going 8 years its hardly a a startup any more. Sonos was once a startup I dont see it had any issues expanding to be the Global leader in wireless speakers.

astute observation. wondering the same re: qobuz.

Knocking Sonos off its pedestal could well be part of the logic behind the acquisition of RAAT

A 10K speaker is probably in the top 1% on price of all models sold and probably more expensive than speakers that 99% of listeners have.
And again, I don’t define high end just by price. There is some very expensive equipment that isn’t very good in terms of performance.
There’s no direct connection between price and performance.
Personally, I think someone who looks down at a pair of speakers costing ā€œonlyā€ 10K as not high end has some issues.

Roon hinted many times that they were considering dropping the lifetime plan as it wasn’t a moneymaker. I have no problem with that for new customers. But dropping existing lifetime customers would be highly objectionable.
Unless you are talking about present lifetime customers paying a very low fee to continue, I’d consider dropping Roon rather than essentially be turned into a non-lifetime customer, as if I’d always been a yearly subscirber.

My thoughts exactly. And yes, I wasn’t suggesting they should drop existing lifetime customers, just that they may stop taking new ones :+1:t2:

I said this as well

Sure. My point was that as there is no good, generally agreed definition of high end, it’s rather pointless to argue about whether a particular not-cheap brand is high end or not

Honestly, Apple was never ever going to agree to integrate with Roon. I don’t know of any niche solutions that Apple supports - and for sure Roon is niche.

The question I don’t have an answer to is:

Why would Harman buy Roon???

That’s why I bought an Eversolo streamer. Played Apple hi res this morning.

Right. But that is very different. You’re playing Apple Music using the Android app. The Android app is not niche at all. I know we are saying the same thing…

Yep. But Im using the Eversolo much more now and Roon a lot less.

To me, one of the absolute key features of Roon is that it brings together my local files and streaming. I subscribe to both Tidal and Qobuz. My plan was to drop Tidal once Qobuz came into the picture but realized Tidal has many albums missing on Qobuz, and I find Qobuz amazing for high res and the ability to purchase albums at a discount. So I have both.

In my library, many (most?) albums have three versions: local, Tidal, and Qobuz. I find the ā€œVersionsā€ feature invaluable at this point.

I have been thinking what would be the best way to use Apple Music fully featured with my DAC (dCS Rossini Apex). Maybe the Eversolo?

Someone depressed for $500 or $700? Enjoy as much as you can now.

Probably, though note that the Apple navigation on Eversolo is not that seamless.

I installed an internal ssd hard drive with about 1 tb of music but it does not integrate with the streaming services like Roon .They are separate. Maybe one day they will have that option , who knows.

I’ve quit with Apple One, and only retained the iCloud storage and Apple Arcade (games) options. Barely used Apple Music at all. Tidal and Qobuz fullfill all my listening needs.

I did get hi-res audio in the living room with Apple Music by connecting my good old 2017 MacBook Air to a Loxjie D30 DAC and connect that to my Cambridge CXA81 amplifier. Pretty cumbersome compared to connecting my Cambridge CXNv2 directly to the CXA81.

Tidal, Qobuz + my own local collection of music is all I need. And Roon brings them all together in one package. It was for me the reason to go lifetime last year after 1,5 years of annual subscriptions.

I paid something like $450 in July 2015 for my lifetime sub. If Roon doesn’t get killed but goes to subscription even for lifers, I am ok with that, I depend on Roon too much at this point. But I fear that it is niche enough that support might dwindle, in which case it will simply die (unlike Slimserver, Roon requires maintenance of cloud services, etc).

I think we are all on rather the same page.

Those of us like myself and @SandsOfArrakis that have only recently gone lifetime perhaps have more reason to question our decision. That being said I also agree with @Khang_Nguyen1 I’ve killed more dollars on an evening that I only have a fuzzy recollection of…………oh well we shall see.
