Roon AI Quality Upgrade

How does the Roon Quality Upgrade proposals in Playlist work? I downloaded a DSD 64 file and roon wanted to replsce it with a Tidal version. How can it know the flac version is better?

It’s just suggestions based on some format preference rules. It doesn’t judge the mastering or the content. They are just suggestions and It’s not necessary to agree and confirm.

I logged in to literally ask the same question. Also, while I have set flac>mqa, the playlist wizard does not respect that and prefers mqa over pcm

Edit:surely, (skirting the question of dsd vs pcm relative merits); surely there should be a logic like this

{lossless(higher sample rate > lower sample rate)} > {lossy(higher sample rate > lower sample rate).

And if a preference towards Mqacan be baked in, the surely for dsd vs pcm should also be possible.

But not knowing if DSD 64 is just upsamling or really recorded in DSD 64 - and Roon cannot know that (correct?) then DSD 64 should be better than Tidal Flac - not?

That’s a matter of belief, preferences, the DAC used, etc.

Maybe Roon should have a way for the user to define what they consider better, but currently there’s just a fixed set of rules. Even with PCM, one might prefer a mastering that’s only available as 16/44.1 over a 24/192 remaster, but Roon will nevertheless mark the latter as „improve“ - and there’s not much else it can do about that.

Best to just treat it just as hints, you are free not to accept the replacement. I think there is a Feedback > Feature Suggestions to ask for a way to mark as „don’t suggest this replacement again“.
