I also have this issue on Android 16, Galaxy S24 Ultra. There’s no method to it but if ARC is playing music in the foreground and you switch into another app, it’ll keep playing in the background with a notification of ARC playing being active.

You switch apps more often, or go back and forth between apps and ARC, at some point, ARC notification will disappear while the music still plays. Any payback controls you may use on your headphones don’t register because Android, due to the lack of an ARC notification, thinks there is nothing playing. And at some point, ARC will die in the background and needs to be relaunched.

It’s pretty wild an issue related to a core functionality of the app (i.e. playing music in the background) that’s as annoying as this is being treated at this low a priority. I can forgive other longstanding issues like still not being able to download our collection in the background without playing music, but this one makes ARC incredibly annoying to use daily. It’s not normal to have to force close a music app regularly in order to get it to play music in the background until it decides to mess up again.
