Roon Does Not Work on Mac Studio

Hi @steveoat87,

Could you please reproduce this issue and share the track/album added, and the specific date and time? We’ll get a fresh diagnostic report to share with our development team for a deeper look. Thank you!

I uploaded 4 files under the name steveoat87 representing my Roon log files under the Mac Studio. I added an album: "Franz Liszt: Annes de Pelerinage II in the Classical I - P folder under the artist Michael Korstick. Roon immediately started scanning all the files. And then crashed shortly afterwards. Something is not right here. This never happens under Rock or Windows. There is clearly a problem here.

Hi @steveoat87,

I suspect the issue is still related to the sheer number of external tags applied to your library, likely from songkong. The Roon Server logs sent over are filled with the following:

Info: GetOrCreateUserTag: there is an existing tag called Boxset:

Including a wide variety of different boxset tags. So we can provide the team a better idea of what exactly is occurring during the crash, we are hoping you can provide the logs directly from the Mac. Please see the following steps:

  1. Open Console.app (this is part of mac os x. You can command-spacebar and then type “console” to find it).

  2. Then go into the “Crash Reports” section, and see if you can find any Roon crashes in there.

  3. For any crashes, paste the contents into a text doc and then upload the crash report here and let us know once you’ve done so

Benjamin/Norris,

I uploaded 5 crash reports (roon crashes from my Mac Studio), though there are hundreds. The have the basic identifier of Roon App 2024 5 -14. Please let me know if you need anything else.

Bruce

Hi @steveoat87,

Thanks for sending those over! It does appear that your Roon Server (on the mac) is continually scanning these tags, which is likely leading to the crash.

Not an ideal situation for now, but if you’d be interested in testing the removal of even more tags, I’m confident your performance would increase. I’d make a fresh backup to save your work before making any edits.

Benjamin,

Are you referring to removing all the box set tags? Is that it, or anything else?

Benjamin/Noris,

A few additional questions.

Why do I get constant crashes on the Mac (with the box set tags), but hardly get any crashes when running Roon Rock or Windows?

Any insight why Roon on the Mac scans all folders when you add a file to only one folder – do not see this happening on either Rock or Windows.

Hi @steveoat87,

I believe just the boxset tags are causing the trip up.

I don’t have a specific answer for you just yet! This issue seems to be tied to your machine specifically, so we’re hoping the crash logs you sent over will provide further insight. Our developers have a ticket to take a closer look.

I hope to have more information to share soon. In the meantime, I’d continue to remove any Song Kong-related tags and see how things perform.

Not sure that the issue is tied just to my machine. I just tried to install a Roon Core on my Mac Studio M2. I have removed all the box set tags. In this installation I am having about as many crashes as I did with the M1 studio. There seems to be something not quite right with Roon Core on a Mac.

Hi @steveoat87,

Thanks for the report.

Does the issue occur on a fresh database with the fresh install? This would mean not restoring from a backup immediately.

Fresh install. Building from scratch

Hi @steveoat87,

Thanks for the additional information here. We have a ticket in with our developers for further investigation based on the crash reports you’ve sent over.

I think you may be correct here, I hope to have more information to share soon. Thanks for your patience in the meantime!

Hi Ben, FYI I gave up with Roon on the Mac Studio. Nothing but continual crashes – impossible to live with. As a contrast, I just bought a new windows machine that I installed Roon core on (Minisforum Core i9. No problems whatsoever. The database is still being created but no crashes, no rescanning of items that have already been scanned. Hope you can fix the mac issue since it would seem to be an ideal core for Roon, with its large amount of RAM and excellent single core specs.
