Roon finds ropieee in "about" but I cannot output audio to it

I have a HifiBerry with a DAC+ for Pi4, which I bought and installed 5 years ago.
It worked perfectly for 5 years, then a few days ago it disappeared from the audio options.

It seems the microsd card had become corrupted, so I put in a new card, and followed the instructions at RoPieee | Getting Started to flash the software.

I connected via web interface to the IP of the HifiBerry.
From the Roon client on the PC, if I go to settings → about, I see the ropiee.

However, if I go to settings → audio I don’t see it, so I cannot output audio to it.

I have configured it (via its web interface) as: Audio HHAT: HifiBerry Dac+ Standard/Amp2/Amp4
I also tried other configurations, but nothing seems to work.

From the webui, I set Remore → Roon control zone = “kitchen”
However, in Roon → settings → extensions I don’t see anything

The HifiBerry connects to my network with a LAN cable (no wifi).
I do not have a remote nor a screen connected to it.

I have tried the IT approach of rebooting everything, more than once.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Perhaps send the feedback reference to @spockfish ?

I have “sent feedback” from webui → advanced → send feedback and the identifier is:

b3564945de23d4c2

I must have spent hours troubleshooting this.

These settings (webui → audio → audio hat) didn’t work: Roon didn’t find the device in settings -audio

  • HifiBerry DAC+ standard (this is my device)
  • HifiBerry DAC+ pro
  • HifiBerry DAC2 HD

These ones caused the device to appear in Roon (settings - audio), but then it didn’t work: the Roon app tells me a song is playing, but no audio can be heard

  • HifBerry DAC
  • HifiBerry DAC+ DSP
  • HifiBerry DAC+ Zero

I also played around with the device settings (settings - audio - device setup) and with multiple combinations of “DSD playback strategy” and “volume control”, but to no avail - nothing works.

The odd thing is that it all worked perfectly till a couple of days ago!!

I wonder if it could be a hardware fault in the HifiBerry and if I need to replace it. I have had it for 5 years and a half

This feedback shows a proper audio device, also recognized by Roon.

I suggest not to change configs all over the place, or try other devices. So can you configure it like a DAC+ (like in this feedback) and tell what’s going on? Because from this logs everything is fine. I can even see you playing audio on it…

Thanks

I installed it 5 years ago, so I don’t remember how I had configured it, but I have double checked the email confirming my order, and it shows:

1x HiFiBerry DAC+ bundle Pi 4
1x HiFiBerry DAC+ standard - RCA version

So I was very surprised when I setting “DAC+ standard” didn’t work.

In the 3 configurations I mentioned above (DAC, DAC+ DSP and DAC+ Zero) Roon finds the device, and I can use the Roon app on my phone or PC to start playing a song on the HifiBerry. The app shows the slider of the song progressing, as if the song were playing… but no audio can be heard!!!

I suppose the logs show that Roon thinks it is playing the audio, but of course don’t show that no audio comes out.

The Hifi Berry is connected to a small amp which is in turn connected to some speakers integrated in the ceiling.
For completeness, I have connected other devices to the amp, and the audio plays just fine (so amp and speakers are OK).
I have also connected a mini speaker to the HifiBerry, but nothing.

Do I need to set remote → roon control zone? I have tried changing that, but nothing.

Also, I remember that I used to be able to control the volume from the phone, on a scale of 0 to 100. Instead, even playing with various settings of DSD and volume control, I don’t get that, I either get a volume in dB or the message “volume fixed”

Again, don’t change settings all over the place. It’s makes figuring out what’s going on very difficult. Go back to the basic setting. No DSD, a setup as simple as possible. And then we can figure out why you aren’t hearing things.

which setting do you suggest? It is a DAC+ standard, but DAC+ standard doesn’t work (Roon doesn’t find it)

Again, go back to the setting you had when you send me feedback. And that was standard, and that was working.

I’m more than happy to help out here, but we need to eliminate things.

I have set it back to “HiFiBerry DAC” and reset the default settings for volume and DSD.
But it wasn’t working before and it isn’t working now - Roon thought it was playing music but no music was being played.

I didn’t expect that it would work now. That’s the whole point. But now we can investigate.
Can you send me feedback?

I see. Sure, the identifier is:
8549fa69658690b9

I should maybe mention that, compared to when it was working last week, I have since upgraded my Synology NAS to DSM7 and installed the version of Roon for DSM7

So… why did you configured it as a ‘DAC’ while it is a ‘DAC+’?

“DAC+ standard” (which is what it is) doesn’t work, Roon doesn’t see it

Roon sees the following:

  • HifBerry DAC
  • HifiBerry DAC+ DSP
  • HifiBerry DAC+ Zero

I have no clue which is the most similar to the one I have, nor what the differences are - that’s why I asked if there was any recommended option among these 3

Again, forget about Roon for a minute. I’m trying to help out here.
You say it’s a Hifiberry DAC+. Then configure it as a DAC+. And then we’re going to look further.

I see.
I have configured it as a Hifiberry DAC+ standard, which is what it is.
The identifier is 508399939c2ed40f

Thanks a lot - I truly appreciate your time!

Hmmm…

When you configure it as a regular ‘DAC’, it is properly recognized - however there’s no volume control.

when you configure it as a ‘DAC+’, which is the right setup (assuming it is for real a ‘DAC+’), but in that case it reports errors during initialization. Hence no audio device whatsoever.

Not sure what’s going on: the device can be damaged, or there’s a problem with the driver (which I can’t do much about) - when did you upgrade RoPieee to 2025.05?

This might be the Hi Fi Berry volume driver issue.

With device volume the device automatically resets to zero volume.

I was able to work round it using two roon remote devices - details here

You only have to do this once (after a clean install).

The alternative is to use Hi Fi Berry’s OS.

It’s not. There’s no volume control whatsoever. So there is no way to control it all together.

@YetAnotherLondoner longshot, but can you try it with the Justboom Amp HAT / DAC HAT configured?
