Roon Friend's - A Social Take

Is it just me of would others like a social component adding into Roon?

It can have a friends system that allows us to choose who sees what. Much like a friends list on Facebook.

It could share a live now playing screen to show what friends are listening to and maybe show new albums they have added to their library and their favourite tracks.

There could be a DND mode that allows you to listen to music privately when you want to also.

For those concerned with privacy, its an invite only basis, you have DND (do not disturb/private) mode. Or just don’t use it.

What do people think? I’m not suggesting it becomes social media or even has chat. Just music focused info sharing between friends you have approved.

This isnt a feature request at this point, before a mod decides to move it.

Spice girls is playing right now in my office. I want an option to mark albums as private. Similar to the Ban option.

I wont try to justify Spice Girls.

Spice up ya life.

Nope . Definitely not. I don’t even have social media (no Facebook, no instagram etc ).

What roon needs is better performance, not more stuff that take resources away.

Please don’t. Social media is the worst thing ever invented.

No thanks.

Well that was shot down quick, fair enough.

There will always be bugs and issues that have to run parallel with new features for the software to move forward.

3 out of 3 is a pretty firm no though. I wonder if this is an age demographic thing. Im 36.

I’m 27 and I have recently detoxed from all social media and have taken to using a dumb phone, the resulting peace of mind is palpable; and as an aside, I have had more coffee dates in the last three months than I had in the preceding twelve months!

Thats awesome.

I too dont use social media anymore. Its full of brain dead crap. I dont want roon to be social media by the way. I just want to know what other people are playing whos tastes relate to mine. Or go straight to a friends recommended tracks on a new release for example.

Im 37 and gave up on social media about 10 years ago.

If roon ever turns into a Facebook/wechat kinda platform I’m out

Wise move, you have preserved brain cells haha.

I like your idea, it makes me think about last.fm about 15 years ago.

I had both Spotify and Facebook while they were very new on the market, so I remember them at their best (IMO). It felt much more relaxed and enjoyable in comparison to what they have now become. Facebook I got rid of many years ago. It was actually a fun product while the only things that’d come on your feed was just from the people you had in chronological order.

Spotify also gives off the Facebook energy nowadays out of all the music apps. Every major revision I feel like I have to turn ‘X’ off or hide ‘X’ just so I can get to the music and stay with that.

Music is a safe space for me - I like the privacy - the last thing i want is to share my activity over fecesbook or similar. if I have some music worth sharing about I can just email my friends.

I was highlighting the potential for truth compromises in social media, I’m also not sure what a coffee date is either……I heard it in Shoreditch, so it seemed appropriate!

Isn’t this forum a form of social media

And it’s also a place to share listening recommendations with virtual friends :notes:

I think that this has been suggested since almost the day after Roon launched. I am sure there is a thread for it under Feature Requests that you could add your vote.

I think that being able to

  • Share a Playlist with fellow Roon users
  • See what my friends are listening to in Roon

are a minimum of what Social should be included. When the DJing extension was working years ago, I regularly had 10 to 15 fellow users logging in to listen to what I was playing.
