ROON having difficulty playing FLAC off NAS

I don’t know if it’s a hardware or software problem and I am trying to assume nothing, hence why I am trying to rule out things one by one.

I am not a fan of such cables because Cat8 has grounding which is known to cause occasional issues (and therefore is only recommended in high-interference environments like data centers that are well planned and managed) and I am not a fan of AQ cables because they have been shown to violate ethernet compliance in independent tests.

But even if you used regular cheap Cat6 cables from Amazon I would still recommend to replace them for testing because we don’t know where the problem is.

You are free to come up with your own ideas. My list wasn’t meant to be the bible, just a bunch of ideas. You could also try installing on a different PC, or test with a clean Roon install without restoring a DB. Many ways to go about it. Good luck and good bye

Can you temporarily make the MacA the core? To see if it is the Win11 machine causing this?

Do you have a good backup of your DB so that you could try re-installing the core on the Win11 machine?

PS: I have the Schiit Hel on my main computer and like it very much. I have the Yggdrasil on my main headphone/earspeaker amps (BHSE, LAu, LL2SS).

oh, do you have any DSP active?

:man_facepalming:

You are certainly free to ignore perfectly reasonable troubleshooting steps, but this is a rather unusual way to respond to somebody trying to help you.

PS Whatever that thing that audioquest sold you is, it is not an Ethernet cable.

I uninstalled Roon everywhere and factory reset the cxn. DLd Roon on my pc. Played on the pc fine. Add the cxn and stuttering.

Was going to move core to the Air, but OS update…

Want to restart everything but my wife works from home and going out of town this weekend - so I have to wait til midnight or so.

Thank you! I’ll be back after I can mess around a bit.

You might want to rethink your strategy here, openly attacking those who are trying to assist you is not likely to further your solution to this situation.
Whilst you may not agree with some of the suggestions or think they have merit, openly disrespecting the community members who are just trying to help is very ill advised and not in the spirit of this forum.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Actually it could be, as AudioQuest makes USB, HDMI, etc. and indeed ethernet cables in numerous configurations.
The “cinnamon” ethernet cable they make is rated at Cat7:

Of course all AudioQuest Ethernet cables honor the directionality inherent in all analog and digital audio cables; arrows on the jackets indicate the direction (from source to destination) for the best audio performance.

:person_facepalming: No, it’s not. They sell it as one to people who do not know any better, but it’s not. And an actual Cat 7 cable is supposed to use a different connector than the one used by Cat 6 (and previous ones, as well as pretty much all of home networking equipment)/ Not that it really mattered as Cat 7 is a stillborn thing with basically no practical reason.

It sort of looks like a fancy packaged Ethernet cable, and it might even occasionally work as an Ethernet cable, but it really is not. Pretty par for the course for AQ, of course.

Thank you so much for this response.

So far the only thing that only occasionally works is roon.

Having hung around these forums for quite a few years, and having read many similar support requests, I’d strongly advise you to try the troubleshooting steps outlined by @Suedkiez as this sounds very much like a networking issue.

Hi @Seth_Bowers,

Thank you for your patience while we worked through the support queue to reach your inquiry.

We recommend starting with a RAATServer refresh and letting us know if it relieves and improves symptoms at all:

You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder
