Roon MOCK on 1u server

I was thinking of getting a roon server in a 1u server form factor. But I’m not sure exactly what to look for in terms of compatibility. I was looking around for a cheap 1u server second hand to save some money. I don’t have many demands in terms of performance (small library, only ever one zone max). I was looking for something along the lines of: ≥ Supermicro X10SLM-F 1U SuperChassis 512L-260B — Servers — Marktplaats

I don’t mind spending and time knowing it will “probably work” but not 100%, but I don’t wanna spend it thinking it’s 50/50 on working or not, if that makes sense.

Has anyone else made it work one way or the other in a 1u server chassis?

Cheers, Leroy

I would just run Linux and Linux RoonServer.

Yes, much more efficient and easier to manage: just install the Roon Server on your Linux distribution of choice and be happy with the stability and efficiency of it .

Whether Linux is running on a 1U server, a tower case, a desktop case, a mini PC case, makes no difference to Linux nor to Roon.

The salient point is making sure your server is dimensioned appropriately (in the sense of CPU, Memory, and Storage – not the physical size of the case) for your Roon library size and that you have good LAN connectivity (ethernet is best ofcourse, as well a proper Wifi with for example real APs.)

It’s just I’ve got 0 experience with Linus, and I have used a NUC with ROCK before and I was happy with the experience. I liked the idea of the idea of roon ‘being’ the os, rather than an os running roon (and other stuff I don’t need it too)

Oh well, sure, run a MOCK then.

You mentioned a Supermicro 1U server. Do you have a Rack? And someplace where it stands where the loud whine of 1U server fans won’t disturb you?

That’s exactly why I’m interested it one, so I can consolidate stuff in my network rack that don’t need to be handy nearby:)
