Prof. B. F. Skinner, the behaviorist, reported what he called Superstition in Pigeons. He observed that if he randomly rewarded pigeons with a food pellet, whatever they were doing at the time, they would repeat, including a small dance.
Most often Roon works for me. I subscribe annually for the past 5+ years and concurrently subscribe to Qobuz. I use the combination as a jukebox. I select a song and sometimes an album that I like or want to experience. I do not make playlists etc. I do not sit and listen to music due to time constraints.
I turn on my McIntosh MA9000 integrated amp. Turn on my NUC. Turn on my Auralic streamer and my Denafrips Terminator+. I open the Roon app.
Sometimes it works. Equally often in the past month, it does not.
So I reboot everything including the router. I change the boot sequence. I change the time gap between devices. I power down and power up devices.
Sometimes it works. Equally often, it does not.
I then decide that insufficient time exists for this exercise so I play a CD or an LP.
Or I turn on SONOS.
Not seeking a solution, not a complaint, but I am amused at my doing a dance that only randomly is associated with success.
Have you tried leaving your NUC on? Roon doesn’t generally like to be shut off then started only when used. It has been designed to be an appliance; that is to say, on all the time. This allows Roon to settle down and stay updated with small updates to its metadata as it relates to your music.
I’m not dismissing the fact that you used to not have problems, FWIW. Roon could just be struggling to keep its metadata up to date with your collection it its current state.
In summer we get horrendous lightening storms so every night , often more regularly, every sensitive bit of electronics gets unplugged.
The hint is timing , my modem/router etc takes several minute before the Internet connects, then and only then can you start the NUC , if you jump the gun then a quick restart of the Roon server from the web admin page fixes it.
Several things obviously need a connection to start up properly , Metadata Improver is one , the Streaming services another (I have to manually reconnect Tidal for example)
My Roon Nucleus server and Mac Mini server both run 24/7 and both are connected by ethernet. Every morning, I turn on my RPi4, Meridian Prime, and Denon AVR-2805. It always works streaming from Tidal and/or Qobuz.
I think leaving your NUC on 24/7 might possibly resolve the issue.
I have to add something. It was different for me with Roon. Sometimes well for weeks (months is not, but weeks yes), sometimes very frequent problems. I used to think about life. I stopped. I have been paying an annual salary from the very beginning of my existence. I stopped. I am currently paying for a monthly subscription and I think it is the best option psychologically. Yes, I pay more, I know about it, but also when problems like what I had quite recently start again… I’ll take a break, or I’ll give up at all without any “oh, wow”. Simply. I appreciate the effort of programmers, but there are things that I just don’t like. Tidal is sinking, there is no new one, integrations sometimes last too long, it happens to hang, a lot of it. It has always worked on my iMac 24/7. I was thinking about migration, but I thought it was a good home (because it was very powerful) for this rather demanding software. If Roon stops working there, there will be no new impulse (new services, improved stability) - I will give up.
My memory may be faulty, but it seems like we saw behavior like this happening to other folks when they had other network devices with the same network name on them at the same time.
I searched the boards but couldn’t find the original thread.
You may wish to look at the devices on your router for this issue.
As I noted, I merely thought it was interesting that I would go through so many exercises for something to which I listen for an hour or so, two days per week.
Thunderstorm, lightning, and power surges are frequent, and, as I mentioned to one of the Moderators, I do not share personal information such as location.
BTW, FWIW, keeping the NUC on did not result in a change in outcome. Again, I was chiefly interested in how a technology could control my behavior.
Here is something you might find interesting interesting: If Roon is accessed from an iPad, it immediately connects, and if accessed from a Mac, then the B.F. Skinner dance is required.
Now that’s an interesting concept since my “problem” began in that timeframe. In either case, the iPad(s) work(s). So I can listen to The Final Cut. Again, thank you for the input.
It depends on the type of UPS you use. The cheaper Pb-Acid deep cycle batteries are not designed to allow for high levels of discharge. If you use up the battery capacity/recharge/discharge/recharge etc the battery will not last long (literally weeks)
They are designed to provide power to allow a “graceful” shutdown of kit.
The Li type used in solar installs etc are designed for 90% Discharge but cost enormously.
