Roon upsampling but DSP disabled?

Hi,

I am trying to get to the bottom of some pops and clicks in my system. I have changed music, source (file to Tidal stream; fewer on tidal source), amplifier (same), interconnects (same) and power sources (same).

I want to eliminate any Roon elements or Roon core processing that may cause them pops and clicks. And I am seeing upsampling even though dsp is disabled.

Why is Roon upsampling when DSP is off? Any tips appreciated.

The music is Massive Attack Collected (HD track at 24/96 was popping everywhere). I have a Zen Innuos Mini mkii and chord qutest connected with a curious USB)

May be because of your Device Setup. What does that look like?

Currently set to the default for a qutest.

I’m guessing Roon is upsampling because the lowest res the Qutest can do is 44.1k.

Right. Makes sense.

I ignored that because I thought Tidal HiFi was all min CD quality. But it’s right there in front of me!

Correct.

Hmm, I wonder why Tidal is serving you a 22.05kHz (but 24bit!) stream, which theoretically encodes only up to 11.025kHz. Roon even indicates this as “Low Quality”.

When I play the same track from Tidal, I get a 16/44.1 stream.

You could file a support case with Tidal.

I had a look at my library and there are three options, the second AAC shows as the one from my screen shot above TIDAL AAC. If I select the ‘Tidal’ version it shows a s 16/44.

I am not sure what the AAC version is…?

Hello @Benjamin_Jack,

We’re investigating why you’re getting a 22.05kHz stream from Tidal.

In regards to the Sample Rate Conversion, Roon is doing the correct thing to enable playback on your DAC.

If you go to Roon settings then services under Tidal hit edit and see what you have streaming quality set to

Under Services > Tidal the quality is set to Master.

I did try Tidal via Roon this morning and it said I was logged out. I hit ‘log in’ and all seemed well. I’ll restart the server and see if that ‘removes’ the 22k version.

Still two versions from tidal after reboot. I noticed on the tidal app this album is available as a compilation of videos and the tracks appear individually (if you don’t want video audio) as a master version…

Tidal indeed has two versions:

Just delete the low quality AAC version from your Tidal library. The higher quality version has more tracks to boot.
